OH MY GOODNESS IT WAS AWESOME!!!
It wasn't in a theatre, like, no curtains and such, it was in a room with a stage set up in the corner, with Juliet's balcony. The costumes were somewhere between being modern and traditional. The women wore dresses, and most of the guys wore black pants with shirts. And they were mostly hot. Score. =D
At the start, if anyone's familiar with the play, you know the intro part?
Two households, both alike in dignity, in fair Verona where we lay our scene... And so on, instead of actually having a Chorus, they had each character come in from a different part of the room and say two lines of it, while Bittersweet Symphony played in the background. Then, when everyone was on stage, they started saying parts of their lines, but all at different times to another, so there was this really kewl effect of lost of phrases being echoed around, and...yeah. You'd have to hear it.
Romeo was pretty good. Pretty good-looking too. =D He played it very well, I thought. He does the sad thing very well.
Benvolio was good too. He shone in the fight scenes, which were extremely well done, and looked painful and such. And also pretty cute.
Mercutio. Oh my. Where do I even begin? Firstly, the guy playing him was hot as, and his shirt only had the bottom button done up. =D And what an entrance! He came up from the back of the room, along the aisle, singing rather drunkenly (Just before the ball-thing the Capulets have)and I was on the end of the second row, and he comes up and rests on my shoulder, still singing, then winks and continues. He was absolutely lewd, loud and random, like Mercutio is. During his Queen Mab speech, the ...And learns them first to bear, making them women of good carriage! He actually grabs Benvolio, throws him to the ground and pretends to...yes, well, you get the idea. He was fucking HILARIOUS. He was dancing with one of the Capulet's servants at the Ball, ha, you should have seen them. He's such a man-whore, they disappeared off stage, then when Romeo or someone calls for them, the stuble out, and he's not wearing a shirt, and her hair's all messed up and her dress is half undone, and it's SO funny. *sniff* So sad when he died.
Juliet was good, she does the desperate and distraught thing very well, which is hard. And she had reddish hair, which was good, because I just don't like it when Juliets have dark hair...it just seems wrong somehow.
Friar Lawrence was as good as can be expected. Good acting, nothing outstanding, but then, he's not an outstanding character. Another fairly good-looking guy. He had eye makeup on, eyeliner which was a bit smudged, like a panda-eyes look, but less. Hard to explain, but it looked good.
The Nurse was funny as. Ha, she just never shuts up. Very convincing, I thought it was very well characterised.
Tybalt - Very well characterised. And pretty good looking too. Heck, we were spoiled in this play with hot guys. =D He has this kewl jacket on that so well suited him that even at the start when the cast was doing the chorus part, I knew exactly who he was. He had this way of talking where he didn't open his mouth fully, it sounded really kewl. And his mask at the Ball looked like a cat, which is awesome, because Mercutio describes him as "More than just Prince of Cats."
Montague and Lady Montague were pretty good. Montague had this deep booming voice, which was pretty kewl. Lady Montague was funny, she didn't seem to like the Nurse at all, she kept greasing her off at certain parts.
Prince Escalus (Escales? Can't remember) was played by a woman, but it worked quite well. She was very good, but I can't comment too much on it, Prince isn't in very much of the play.
Paris was a complete Ian Thorpe look-a-like. It was uncanny, he could've been his younger brother! Quite good acting, too.
Because there was no curtain on stage, between scenes, they turned the lights off. But when Juliet takes the vial, and everyone thinks she's dead, (only she's not, she's asleep), when they have to get the bed onstage, and Juliet on it, instead of doing it in the dark where we could kinda see them, and it's would've looked a bit stupid, they had Tybalt and Mercutio come out and put the bed there. They were both really solemn, and moved gracefully, and it was obvious they were both supposed to be dead still. Then Juliet came out, and took Tybalt's hand, and he led her up the steps and laid her down on the bed, and he and Mercutio slowly walked out. It was really interesting.
They had a few appearances of Tybalt and Mercutio's ghosts. When Juliet is asleep, the morning everyone finds her and thy're all on stage crying and in shock, Tybalt and Mercutio appear on Juliet's balcony, overlooking the stage. It was creepy, because they're just standing thre, not moving, which is such a huge contrast to when they're alive, because they're so vibrant and full of energy.
Overall, as I think you can tell, I REALLY REALLY enjoyed the play. =D It is running the risk of making me ship the characters. Oh, sod it all, I think I already do. Romeo/Mercutio, Tybalt/Mercutio (Oooh er, it's like Harry/Hermione and Harry/Draco, isn't it?). Possibly also Mercutio/Me. =D
Gah, I'm still squeeing, and it's like, 2:30am. Hopefully I shall dream of hot Shakespearian mansexing.
