tech update

i am seriously contemplating an iphone. i know all the things i said about it one short month ago are still true (ie, it's too expensive, i hate cingular/att and want to switch and it'll be better and cheaper in a year or so when they've worked out all the bugs). but dammit, i saw one for the first time today and it's really an awesome and well-designed piece of equipment. i have hated every cell phone i've ever owned because of clumsily organized menus and scads of worthless features that were added simply because they looked good on paper, so maybe i'll decide it's worth it to me to spend the extra money on something i think is truly worth it. i'm going to the apple store on monday to play with one and see what i think.

i will admit that i have my doubts about the touch keyboard, but i'm willing to be swayed.

also monday, i will have all the appropriate accoutrements for my new(ish) digital camera. i'm scheduled to work monday night, but i can see now that it's going to be all too tempting to call out since i'll have at least one new gadget to play with.

i have exceeded my allowable online netflix viewing for the month. now i'm going to have to wait for the next billing period to find out what happens to lister in season vii of red dwarf. how will i bear the suspense?

and since we're (i'm) talking about large and not-super-justifiable purchases, i'm starting to think it's new car time. any suggestions? my requirements are few, but not particularly flexible: comfortable upright seat (think truck-style bench seat; it's the only thing comfortable on long drives), manual transmission, 5 yrs young or less. and a sunroof/cd player/basic amenities would be nice. and maybe i should get a navigation system so that i'll stop getting lost in east baltimore. smaller and greener is better, but i need to be able to take at least 2-3 people plus associated gear for a weekend camping trip. i'm not too proud to strap stuff to the roof. also, i wouldn't turn down some sort of permanent bike rack device. okay, so some of these are flexible, but the first few aren't. any suggestions from anyone? i'm kind of leaning toward the pontiac vibe or something along those lines.

i really had wanted to get rid of the whole car thing altogether by now, but amtrak charges $120 to get to philly. southwest flights are cheap, but they don't fly to atlanta, which is my most frequent destination. i understand greyhound is a wonderful resource, but my back issues veto most buses, as does my general lack of tolerance for the unwashed masses. that, and i really haven't found a decent and quick way to get to towson without a car (or to work on a weekend, for that matter).

can anyone think of any other purchases i need to bring me a little further into the 20th century? i'm all ears.
