Washington D.C.

I'm going to be making a trip to Washington D.C. for a few days, for the UNICEF committee. Washington D.C. is such a beautiful place, with all that's in it. And I'm quite pleased at the fact that this time around, I'll actually have some time for sightseeing and visiting some of Joachim's friends. It's going to be fantastic.

Days like today in Denmark make me wish I still lived in Hong Kong, where the weather was perpetually above 70 degrees and I could survive on a summer wardrobe. When I married Joachim I knew I had to move to Denmark and to be honest, the weather was the least of my concerns, but even now, more than 5 years later, I still shiver when the television reporter reports snowfall. I love the idea of a winter wonderland, but back in Hong Kong, that was just a advertising cliche. Here, it's reality. My sons love it, though, so I spend a lot of time out in the snow with them, playing.

This past Christmas, we built snow forts, with Joachim and Felix on one team and Nikolai and I on another. We had a ... what do you call those? snow ball fights? It was great fun, and it brought me back to the childhood memories where my father would rent a snow-making machine (without the cold) and my sisters and I would do the exact same thing. Every once in awhile, something takes me by surprise, like the celebration of Asia here in Denmark. The minute I saw all the people from Hong Kong, bringing the sights, smells, and tastes of my hometown, I miss it.

But that was my past. My present and future are here, in Denmark. And I'm going to embrace it, because I love this country enough to call it my own.
