Harry Potter : conversation with my daughter about bullying. My favourite Harry Potter characters

I am still listening to Harry Potter, although I have almost stopped in the book 5 “Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix” to wait for my daughter to finish her reading. “The Order of Phoenix” is my least favourite book and the least favourite film: too long, nothing happens, etc ( Read more... )

i love hermione and viktor and there seemed to be much more chemistry (and logic) to that pairing than her and ron. i also agree with your initial post: there is something between hermione and draco. probably why so many people write fanfiction about them. i confess to feeling that rowling missed a huge opportunity by not getting those two together. it has such a romeo/juliet ring to it and would really have struck a blow against the pureblood/mudblood situation.

i also adore snape for the same reason you mentioned: he's so complex. i've read a lot of comparison of him and heathcliff/darcy/etc and i totally see it. i think it's completely underrated that snape was able to keep his spy cover in the presence of a the supposedly most intelligent and powerful dark wizard and do so much to keep harry alive.

i agree sirius is super sexy but he's too much of bully and bad boy to be attractive to me. (no, that type has never been appealing to me) but i do find his story interesting: the only member of a large, old family to see things differently only to be framed and jailed immediatley after finishing school. he does seem to have mellowed by the time harry meets him though. i would have liked the film version to be more wild, as depicted in the book.

and yes, i see the setting up of ginny and harry pretty early on but i never felt it. i also never felt ron and hermione. i don't understand why rowling wanted to tie the friends up so neatly but didn't flinch at killing a character.

as for dumbledore, i actually liked the early film version of him. as his character got more complex, i liked the layers but i think he felt far too machevillian for a kid's book, imo. and i really am upset that all of dumbledore's ego and past actions are forgiven while snape is persecuted for his desire to belong to a community. it's so obvious that rowling did not like snape and wanted her readers to hate him. she remarks often that she didn't understand why her readers liked him.

My probably very unpopular opinion is that I would have really preferred Harry to die at the end of the series.

yes!!!! i was rooting for him to live until i learned that dumbledore always meant for him to die in order to kill that part of voldemort. and then all of a sudden, he comes back from the dead even though we've been told that is impossible. the fact that he survives his death is a cheat to me.

my favorites are luna, the twins, neville, snape and bella's the most awesome bad guy. she completely outshines voldie.
