UK: Coalition government: my thoughts on pluses and minuses

May 17, 2010 14:45

I am not awfully politically conscious, but although I voted for Labour, the majority of the new agreed policies of the new Conservatives/Liberal Democrats suit me (Coalition policies at a glance can be found here) :

- abolition of ID cards - as a person who grew up in the USSR, I am very very much against any compulsory form of ID, especially anything to do with biometric ID. Big Brother watching my every step = no thank you very much. We had compulsory passport system in the USSR and I can assure you that it doesn't help anything, it only helps the state to control you. If compulsory ID ever surfaces in the UK (I doubt this very much), I will resist it in a big and serious way.

- UK not to join euro in lifetime of Parliament. Seeing the economic problems that Greece and Spain are encountering at the moment and noticing that the fact that both countries use euro as currency is not helping the situation - I am against joining euro. On purely non-politically conscious note, I love pound sterling - the currency looks and feels much better than euro.

On the other hand, the most worrying thing remains that the Budget Cuts are Coming and I worry that this can throw the country out of balance. And there are some other worrying things too.
