Anyone have/had Verizon FiOS? Opinions on its service?

we had it back in DC and would have it again without question. we did NOT have the tv service through it -- only phone/internet.

We did have some issues with the router they put in and we had to get them to enable the ethernet port on it (this took N talking to a couple of different people until he got someone who knew what he was doing), which they would not have been able to do if we had the tv service. They are supposedly phasing out those "older" routers though, last I heard.

Overall, we were happy with the service. We had no or almost no downtime while we had it.

I'd probably run my own router instead of theirs but I wasn't planning TV or phone service through it, just Internet service. Any blocked ports that you know of?

they make you use their router -- we had issues getting it to talk to our other router (that we were actually using) because there was a problem with the Verizon hardware (a known design issue with that model). After we had them enable the ethernet port on it so that we could have it talk to our router, it resolved it. I don't even remember what the problem was anymore though.

I don't recall any blocked ports though I heard reports (from elsewhere) that they did a fair amount of throttling back (I didn't see this and we kept testing for it periodically).

Hmm, ok. I wonder if I can get around that since I'm using an actual machine as the router. I suppose at worst I could just put my router on the DMZ of their router and not worry about it but I'd hate to daisy chain through two routers. Might just have to be one of those things where I yank their router off the system after the installer leaves and put mine on in its place.

also, I neglected to mention -- they may have made us use their router because we were in an early rollout / test group in the DC area. So it's possible that was why we couldn't swap it out. Do you have a fiber card in your NAT box?

[we had our NAT talking to their router, which was a bit of a pain, but worked reasonably well.]

I can put one in but I was just going to have the router plug into their ONT. According to the FiOS pages, they just provide what looks like a standard NAT router with ethernet in and out.

I actually have been preparing for fiber. My main switch is fed by fiber right now but I have a converter to flip it to 100BT before it reaches the router. Later I was going to put a direct 1000FX card in there.

Apparently they relaxed a bit lately. I called up Verizon and talked to Sales and Tech Support. Tech Support has no problems with using my own equipment. The installation cost includes their router so I just have a router sitting on a shelf for something else (maybe put it in my car, I don't know). But I can use my existing router and plug directly into the ONT. They do block some ports on the Residental FiOS but I could get Business FiOS with a static IP for about $30 more a month and have no blocks at all which is what I might end up doing. They will install Business FiOS to a residential area as long as that area has FiOS service available. Plus they'll install the ONT wherever I want them to.
