Inspired by a comment from
idle_grafito in my last post, I decided to put up a list of recommended reading on punk, hardcore, emo, and other assorted counterculture movements. If you have anything I should add, let me know. I think I might try to expand on this in the future, but for now here are a few tasty treats:
Required reading:
My So-Called Punk - This is the one I'm reading right now.
Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk - Mostly talks about New York, CBGBs, all that, but was the first book about the topic, I believe.
England's Dreaming - Obviously more about the Sex Pistols, but still a good read.
Lipstick Traces - I read this a long ass time ago and don't remember much about it but it keeps getting referenced in My So-Called Punk.
Psychotic Reactions and Carburetor Dung - Haven't read this one, but it's a collection of Lester Bang's articles from Rolling Stone and is on my to-do list.
Nothing Feels Good: Punk Rock, Teenagers, and Emo - History of emo, good stuff.
Our Band Could Be Your Life - I actually just found this clicking around on Amazon, but it looks good.
American Hardcore - Book is supposed to be better than the movie, haven't seen either, both on my list of things to consume.
We Got The Neutron Bomb - This one's about LA punk, also haven't read it, just found it on Amazon.
