Long Road Home
By KKftKK
Prologue
It was a dark alley, and lights from the city were morphed by the shadows of the tall buildings.
Her footsteps echoed as if she were in a cave, and as she passed a turned over trashcan, a jet-black cat jumped out and hissed at her.
Ignoring the sound, she tucked her hands deeper into the pockets of her hooded jacket, and walked on.
Her breath could be seen in the air as she reached the end of the alley and looked across the deserted street to an equally deserted, run-down, black-top basketball court. It was this court that was her destination, and she knew that her ‘date’ was waiting for her.
Her shadow was long as she crossed the road and slipped between the broken mesh and onto the court. The worn chains hanging from the hoops at each end of the court were swinging slightly in the breeze, and with a gust of chilly wind, she pulled her hood further over her face, putting it more into shadow.
She was thinner than she once was, almost unhealthily thin, and her once strong body looked worn-down and broken. She looked five years older than she really was, and when she finally lowered her hood, her short hair would stand on end, as if she hadn’t been out of bed in days. Her eyes hooded and dark, an almost haunted look covered her entire face, cheeks and neck hollow, her skin a white it’d never been before.
He was waiting for her in the shadows of a brick wall, in the corner of the court, and his soft call beckoned her over. “Shay,” he whispered, and she looked in his direction, the ghost of a smile crossing her face.
She walked over slowly, and lowered her hood when she reached the shadows, revealing her identity. “Hiya Carlo. You got it?” she asked him softly, edging closer.
“You got my money? You haven’t turned-up in three days.”
“Work, I got held up. I got it,” from her back pocket, she pulled a small wad of cash, and handed it to him.
To her surprise, he slipped it into his pocket, and produced a small plastic bag, tied closed with an elastic band. “You’re not gonna count it?” she asked in shock.
“I trust you Shay, never tried to rip me off once. I’m a business man, I know who to trust.” Slowly, he handed over the bag, and she took in the off-white substance with a sense of relief.
“I’ll see you next week, Carlo. I’ll call.”
Carlo nodded, and turned, disappearing into the shadows, and she soon heard the wire fence creaking, indicating his departure.
She stood for a while, gazing at the plastic bag, and with a sigh of relief and some sadness, then she turned too, turned, and left the court.
Olivia Benson walked off into the night, her life in shambles, her support clutched tight in her closed fist, hidden away in her pocket.
By day, she was Olivia Benson, Captain of Manhattan Special Victims Unit. By night, she was Shay-Lee Morgan, Heroin Addict.
