It's the hardest day of his life and he hasn't stopped smiling. Smiling for the happy couple when really all he wants to do is punch the bride and kiss the groom and make his fairy tale have a happy ending because he deserves that, dammit. But instead, Alex smiles til his cheeks ache and lifts countless glasses of champagne in toast after toast to Mr. and Mrs. Jack and Taylor Barakat.

It's three years later and Alex is all fake smiles and sore jaw muscles again because Jack Jr. was born this morning at exactly 9:47 AM. He sits with the others in the waiting room, pretending to be as excited and happy for the new parents as everyone else is. Rian and Matt are currently fighting over who would be a better uncle to the kid, blood relation aside, and Cassadee is trying her best to explain to Caleb (her and Rian's son) that he's still too young for this 'sex thing'. No one notices when Alex sneaks away for half an hour to swallow as many shots of tequila as he can in the bar two blocks from the hospital. It's stupid but he doesn't know how to kill the pain in any other way.

It's a week later and he's been named godfather to the man he loves' child by another woman. It's supposed to be a big honor and Rian and Zack would've killed for the title apparently, but Alex fails to see how it's an honor in any way to be godfather to a kid that resembles a turnip more then a person.

It's another two years later and it's a birthday party for Matt that somehow Alex got roped into hosting. How anyone expects him to fit more then three dozen people in his two-bedroom house, he still hasn't figured out and Alex decides, after his second glass of wine, that he doesn't really care. He merely throws his front door open, puts ample amounts of chips and dip and soda and alcohol and Mickey Mouse cake on the kitchen counter and tells them all to have at it. Matt swears that it's the best birthday party he's ever been thrown and suggests that Alex should plan Jack Jr's since his birthday is the next up. Alex laughs and says he'll think about it and he doesn't miss the glare that Tay gives him for the rest of the evening.

It's Christmas 2015 and Alex is fairly certain he's beaten his own record by becoming completely hammered before five o'clock that day. It's all a little fuzzy and they’re some alarming black spots in his memory but he's pretty sure that he cornered Jack in Rian's guest bedroom and tried to kiss him. What Alex doesn't know is if Jack stopped him because it was wrong or because he had to stop himself before he went further then he was allowed. Alex hasn't found the courage to ask him either and since Jack hasn't said anything about it, Alex decides not mentioning it ever is best.

It's the following Valentine's and he's Caleb's and Jack Jr.' babysitter because that's who Alex is. He's the babysitter, not the boyfriend, not the husband, not the father. He's the one who sits at home with the kids while the rest of the guys have romantic nights out on the town with their women. As much as Alex wants to blame them, blame it on his status as the default babysitter; he knows that it's all his fault that he has no boyfriends or dates. But Alex gave up on finding anyone else the second he realised no one could compare to Jack. Sometimes he's so disgusted by his feelings towards his best friend that he forgets that bottles aren't meant to be bottomless.

It's the Fourth of July and the gang's gathering at Zack's place for the holiday. There's supposed to be a private fireworks show on the lawn later; Alex is not sure if he's going to attend though. The kitchen and his old friend Jack Daniel don't ask him what's wrong when he's not smiling like everyone else. They don't care if he's in love with his best friend, his married with a kid best friend, and they really don't care if he's close to finishing the entire bottle all on his own. They care though, Jack, his family, his friends, they care when he's not one hundred percent but Alex isn't sure he knows how to be that anymore.

It's Christmas morning and he's crying in Jacks study because he can't deal with this anymore. She can't deal with not having the band still together and being in love with Jack and being expected to make everyone happy with his charm and a dazzling smile, he doesn't even remember being happy himself anymore. It's everything and it hurts so damn much to be Alex and he'd give anything for it to stop, just for a minute, just long enough for him to catch his breath. Jack finds him there, several hours later, completely cried out until he sees Jacks face and there's those tears again, and Jack does the only thing he can think of to get his /friend/ to stop. He holds Alex, cradles him against his chest, and kisses his forehead, cheeks, and then his mouth because Alex moves his head just so. Its like time stops when their lips meet. Alex's world falls back into balance as their kisses deepen, intensify, and they start to move against each other, shedding clothes, fingers touching every bit of skin they can reach and Alex pretends like it does hurt to be the Jacks lover when really its the greatest joy he's ever known.

It's four months into their twisted affair and Alex is fidgeting on his couch, waiting for the door to buzz because it's been nearly a week since he's last seen Jack, touched him, and Alex found that that's nearly a week too long. He squeaks and nearly falls off the couch when that door finally does buzz and he doesn't really care. This isn't about dignity, this is about making himself feel okay, right. He wastes no time after opening the door, grabs Jack by the lapels of his jacket and jerks him towards him, meeting him halfway with her mouth. Jack falters for a moment, surprised by the onslaught of lips and fingers and passion but then he catches up to Alex and matches his fervor inch for inch and they hardly make it to the couch before clothes are shed and Jack is buried inside Alex in one strong thrust. Turns out the couch isn't such a bad place for fucking after all.

It's the day Alex has feared since he met Jack, the day Alex wished he would never live to see, the horrible day when fate steps in and Jack bleeds to death on the street, surrounded by people that can't do a damn thing for him but watch him die. Jack is taking his last laboured breaths while looking up into Alex's tear filled eyes. He coughs up his last few words, only loud enough for Alex to hear.

"I always loved you."

Alex drops to his knees beside Jack, torn between pounding his chest, trying to force the life back into him and stroking his hair, moving it out of Jacks lifeless eyes. He settles on neither, dropping his head to Jacks shoulder and crying until it hurts and even then he doesn't stop.

It's two weeks after Jacks funeral and the only thing keeping Alex from his old friend Jack Daniel is the pink line on the plastic test sitting on his bathroom counter. The box says that means pregnant but Alex can't wrap his mind around that eight-letter word. Pregnant means a baby and a baby means that there's only one possible option for the father and that means his baby doesn't have a father.

It's the day he tells his friends and Tay. The room goes silent for minutes and then Zack carefully asks who the father is and in a moment of stupidity, Alex tells the truth instead of the carefully constructed lie he spend the night before concocting. The color drains from everyone's face, Tays face turning a shade of red Alex has never seen before. Tay orders him to leave her house. Alex adds the 'and never return' part himself.

The rest of the guys take it better than Tay did. Most of them didn't actually like Tay that much. But Alex can't take the shame and painful memories that come with living in Baltimore. So he packs his bags and moves.

It's the day his baby is born and he's in the middle of California and completely alone except for the nurses who keep urging him it'll be okay and the doctor whose hands are icy cold and not helping him relax at all. Fourteen hours and an operation later and Alex has got a brand spanking new baby daughter whose got her father's dark hair and his other father's nose. Alex laughs sadly to himself, slightly thanking that the baby didn't inherit Jacks big nose. He cradles the baby close to his chest and cries for the first time since he left Baltimore, for joy this time because his baby is perfect, despite her politically incorrect parentage.

He names his daughter Annabel because it means 'easy to love' and loving Jack is the easiest thing that Alex has ever done.
