I just watched an unbelievably strange movie. "After Hours," a character study set in New York throughout the course of one rough night for an average white-collar type guy, earned Martin Scorcese the best Director award at the 1985 Cannes festival. The lead character meets a woman in a coffee shop, and she gives him her number. Calling and meeting her turns out to be quite a mistake, and our hero finds himself broke and stranded in the SoHo district of Manhattan all night, where he is confronted by a host of very strange, lonely women.
The movie is a very dark comedy, and almost all of the laughs are nervous, uncomfortable ones. It's incredibly entertaining and engrossing, though.
Highly recommended.
