Lonely Planet
On most days, there is no doubt in my mind that humankind does not deserve to continue as a species on Earth. We have a lot to make up for if we are to continue our species. It's one thing in the 2000 or so years of our pre-industrial civilization to commit crimes against nature in ignorance and seek to place ourselves above the lives of those that allow us to thrive, to maintain our arrogance about our place in the world and pass that arrogance on to our children. It's another thing entirely when we have obtained enlightenment-however slight it may be-about ourselves and about the world we live in yet still continue to perpetuate those crimes. It makes me mad that the way we live today is a result of greed, willful ignorance and conscious indifference. Stupid and greedy people run the world and want to take it away from the rest of us.
I've compared us to bacteria in a petri dish, about to run out of room. But really these are two different situations, at least it should be since humans have a brain! Supposedly we can reason and therefore should be able predict the future based on the facts on hand in the present. Logically we should have been able to see-and prevent!-the consequences of our actions a long time ago (like when we started to see the effects we have on nature). It boggles the mind that even to this day we can't even reach a consensus on the fact that we're destroying the world, one tree at a time!
In all fairness, the problem is complex and there is not a one size fits all solution. It's global, and it encompasses population control, poverty, economy, policy and you name it. It also requires a long term strategy, which from what I can see seems to be anathema to your run of the mill politician. But am I crazy or shouldn't it be THE top priority or damn all of us and any future generations we have too.
In other words, go see the BBC series "Planet Earth". The Earth is our mother, protector, beloved and cherished, but it's time to acknowledge that we're like an adult trying to suckle her teats and try to take that next step toward having a healthy relationship with her.
