lost rewatch 3: 1x06-1x08

It’s becoming really hard to have deep thoughts about Lost… Yesterday we spent most of the time commenting Josh’s hair and shoulders, and Foxy’s ass and chest, whenever they were on screen… *g*

Sorry for the double posting, I kept forgetting a few things in my already long review...Now I'm done.

Anyway, girlish squeeing aside, I’ll (maybe) surprise you with this review, because who impressed me most on yesterday’s episodes (House of the rising sun, the Moth, Confidence Man) was… Charlie.

He was a really interesting character at this point, and I’m now regretting that he had somehow faded during the following episodes and seasons, and got some light again just at the end.
In these three episodes, his story arc was about the drugs, and detox.
He had some poignant scenes with Locke, when he traded his remaining drugs for his guitar, and then when Locke made him ask three times for the drug before giving it back. When he throw it in the fire, I was really happy for him, he was much stronger than before. In the end, he pulled himself together so much that he was able to take care of someone else - meaning Claire. That peanut butter scene, sappy as it might - it’s one of my favourite scenes. It’s someway right that Charlie didn’t choose that moment for his top five, but Claire would definitely have.

There are a lot of wonderful Jack/Charlie scenes too… and I am now somewhat inclined to read some Jack/Charlie fics - if someone can recommend any.
The cave-in scene was powerful, and, even while worrying for Jack, I couldn’t help feeling sorry for Charlie. He was in withdrawal, he was feeling useless… And then Jack recognizes the synthoms and they spoke about it. And after, when they were by the fire together, and Jack fended off the questions about Charlie’s health…He It was so sweet! I haven’t decided yet if I like them as a couple or as a big brother/baby brother… Jack would have been happy, and proud, to have Charlie as a brother-in-law. It’s a pity that, up to 1x08, Claire is flat and almost non-existent. It would have been great to see both Charlie and Claire have a personality at the same time.

I couldn’t help counting how many scenes Dom, Evie and Foxy had together in these early episodes. Knowing that it was what made Dom and Evie fall in love is quite sweet… I hope Foxy didn’t feel like a third wheel! *g*

Evie was prettier in these early episodes, especially Confidence Man, where she was wearing that green top. In general, I think she's the only Lost actress that is prettier on the show than outside, at premieres or award shows. She simply can't dress up, apparently, she has no taste.

As for Kate, the writers were already writing her as an indecisive bitch: one episode she attacks Sawyer on the spot as soon as she sees him (and he had hiked up there just to tell her about Jack!), then, after the cave-in, she flings herself at Jack, like she was her girlfriend or whatever, and in the following episode she is all “Sawyer and I have a connection”. This is exactly why she is not good for either of them!
(How different from the true Charlie/Hurley hug in the same scene!)

Again, there were a lot of wonderful Jack/Sawyer scenes:
When Jack and a lot of other people move to the caves, whose tent does Sawyer take? Jack’s of course. The man really liked to push Jack’s button every time he could!
Than, the well-known dialogue between Sawyer and Kate: “The difference between us ain't that big, sweetheart” - talking about himself and Jack (not "the doc", this time)

In CM, the “wanna see who’s taller” line didn’t crack me up just because I was dreading the rest. But that line is so Sawyer! This episode is really among the best. Well-written and well-acted. Josh was positively glowing. Then the letter, the torture, Sawyer’s flashback, the hurting explanation of Sawyer’s behaviour… Jack hitting Sawyer twice without him hitting back… and in the end he didn’t have the inhalers. “Never did”. Everything made my heart ache for him. And, it cost me a lot saying this, but the kiss was so hot!

Jack wasn’t at his best, as far as ethic goes, in this episode. It’s true that he was the one who stopped Sayid, but he is also the one who seconded his idea of torturing Sawyer.
In the previous two episodes, however, he was so good!
I have never seen Jack smile so much as in 1x05… when Kate teases him about his tattoos, and then again in a lot of other scenes. It’s so good to see him smile!
And oooh, the scratches! He had the dislocated shoulder, and he holds his arm a little...so sweet! Sometimes I long for hurt!Jack so much it's unhealthy. Particularly for him, since obviously nobody can really take care of him...
And naked!Jack with the bees scene! *pets bees*
And that scene, when he made Shannon breathe with him.. When he is all in doctor-mode he's even hotter!

Sayid was at his worst here. He really lost it. But from the following crisis he emerged stronger and wiser. Here it was that Sayid/Kate chemistry that Sawyer was the first to notice and mock. It's true that Sayid acted protective towards Kate, when he left her with Sawyer, and she let him, without bitching as usual. Then, when he left after CM, he even kissed her hand!

Boone was annoying again...He is, with Michael and Kate, among the few characters that haven't improved on a second watch.
Sun and Jin had really gone a long way from these episodes…

The moral is “no one is as it seems”.
