all the reviews i have read of superman returns (90% saying it is bad) come off as an essay about salvation, religion, and the plight of man versus ideal.
at the very least, even if the film is bad, it has forced the critics to ponder these notions.
i can not help but think that part of the reason for the bad reviews is that film is making people uncomfortable
in the same light i also feel there is a glint of hunger for films that tackle these concepts effectively
