The internet, viral media, and web 2.0

1) Is the internet similar or different to other technologies of visual culture we have looked at so far in this class? How so?

As was stated, the internet isn't just a way to feed out information to the masses such as television and radio, it also allows the user to interact with the media, give feed back and even change it. it is uncensored and uncontrolled therefore free speech is taken to all levels and everyone can have an opinion.

2) What are some advantages of making/viewing art on the internet? Are there any disadvantages?

an easy advantage is getting noticed. using a mass service such as Facebook or DeviantArt, an artist can easily break through some layers, let others see their work and you can easily get feedback. But a huge downfall is theft or the simple fact that you chances of making big sales on the internet are practically nill.

3)In the following examples, are the artists doing something they would otherwise be unable to do if it weren’t for internet technology?

these project could have been completed without the use of internet, but it would never had been as successful or as widespread as they are now. maybe a blip in the newspaper about how you can control a garden with a computer based at a museum, or an article in a magazine, but since technology can be passed around so easily and let other actually interact with certain things from a distance it skyrockets it's popularity over that which it would be without.
