Sherlock Holmes, Prince Florizel and Father Brown: Some of Eccentricity

When Sherlock Holmes is not busy with a case, he fires a monogram of Queen Victoria on the wall of his room. By contrast, Bohemian Prince Florizel runs from the cases because they are state concerns, he replaces a suit, puts on a wig and glues moustaches.
Eccentricity is peculiar of two our heroes. Sometimes, it’s to such an extent that both wish to involve in the eccentricities as many people. For example, Florizel has decided to replace reprisals over the enemy with a duel. To find suitable seconds, he sifts all without business of gentlemen loafing about London. Carriage of Prince selects the idlers and brings them in a leased private mansion. The furniture is rented, the servants and an orchestra are employed, wines and snack are ordered. And all for that, observing from a portiere for the meeting, Florizel could choose two perfect gentlemen, - enough free in their actions to be got involved in adventure, and enough scrupulous in points of honour not to give out another's secret. The weapon of the prince is Psychology multiplied by an eccentricity, and powered with good manners.
Directed by Florizel the unusual performance has anticipated Sherlock Holmes's staginess, like that one later the Great Detective acted out for Irene Adler (incidentally, with the Bohemian king’s money), when on a quiet street he has brought a gang of ragamuffins, the grinder, two guardsmen and tens gapers … and to the appointed term the fire (true, artificial fire) he has organised.
In their direction both Holmes and Florizel rely on the laws of human nature: just Holmes uses them as a master key, for example, to get into the house, and the prince as if purposely does everything to test their durability. As a matter of fact, all adventures of Florizel are one grandiose performance. THIS is the difference. Holmes subordinates psychology to «a scientific method» - the prince lives in it.
Florizel’s way to life is as different from the scientific method of Sherlock Holmes, as it is much related to «Human Approach» of Father Brown, the hero of Chesterton’s stories. They both too well know a human nature: temptations and defects, weaknesses and vices, affection and impulses. All this is their first elements; the muddy sea where they catch "the stumbled souls" is more exact. Remember? - «He has not the Method, - thoughtfully repeated Father Brown else's words. - I am afraid that they do not have reason».
… All those Father Brown’s «strange tricks»: he pours out the soup at the wall, replaces salt and sugar in the saltcellars, - is absolutely in the spirit of tricks of Prince Florizel, but there is the small exception. Near at hand at the prince are whole royal guards, near at hand at the priest-detective is only an umbrella. It is interesting, what they would think about each other if they could meet? «The pious detective», - would be surprised the prince. «The dangerous virtue multiplied by arrogance», - the sacred father would think. Really, Prince Florizel is dangerously close to a side separating good and evil. In comparison with Father Brown, he is almost all-powerful. Thank to both a scope of adventures and cosmopolitism of his nature, he could be called «the Prince of the World» that starts us thinking. Florizel effortlessly takes part in another's fates, presents the poor things with money, the stray with lectures. «I know such people, - father Brown could tell about the prince. - In life they go as if on the tense rope, and till a time try not to think of who is holding and pulling the rope».
If Florizel be born not the prince, but the mere mortal, what would be the way he chose, having the same talents and the same intuition? It is very improbable that the path of a clerk or an official, more likely, the way of a noble adventurer like Arsine Lupine or a thief Flambeau. However, a very good knowledge of people is likely to be raised disappointment in his quite early. Further his fate with a high probability would develop so - at last he would commit any grandiose and highly impressive offence: for example, would steal Raja’s diamond from General Vandeleur, and would battle to the Chairman of Club of Suicides on duel (because hates disgraceful game). Then he would drown the diamond in a river, and would become the priest. Like Father Brown.

Когда у Шерлока Холмса нет дел, на стене своей комнаты он выстреливает вензель королевы Виктории. Богемский принц Флоризель, напротив, бежит от дел, ибо это государственные дела, сменив костюм, надев парик и наклеив усы.
Двум нашим героям свойственна эксцентричность. Иногда до такой степени, что оба не прочь втянуть в свои чудачества как можно больше народа. К примеру, решил Флоризель заменить расправу над врагом - дуэлью. Чтобы найти подходящих секундантов, он просеивает всех без дела слоняющихся по Лондону джентльменов. Карета принца подбирает праздных гуляк и свозит их в съемный особняк. Арендована мебель, нанята прислуга и оркестр, заказаны вина и закуски. И всё ради того, чтобы, наблюдая из-за портьеры за собравшимися, Флоризель смог выбрать двух безупречных господ, - достаточно свободных в своих действиях, чтобы ввязаться в авантюру, и довольно щепетильных в вопросах чести, чтобы не выдать чужую тайну. Оружие принца - психология, помноженная на чудачество, и возведенная в степень хороших манер.
Необычный спектакль, придуманный Флоризелем, предвосхитил инсценировки Шерлока Холмса - вроде той, что позже великий сыщик устроил для Ирен Адлер (кстати, на деньги богемского короля), когда на тихую улочку он вывел банду оборванцев, точильщика, двух гвардейцев и десяток зевак… и к назначенному сроку организовал пожар, правда, ненастоящий.
В своей режиссуре Холмс и Флоризель опираются на законы человеческой природы: только Холмс пользуется ими как отмычкой, например, чтобы проникнуть в дом, а принц будто нарочно делает всё, чтобы испытать их прочность. По сути, все приключения Флоризеля и есть один грандиозный спектакль. В этом их разница. Холмс подчиняет психологию «научному методу», принц - живет в ней.
Жизненная метода Флоризеля настолько же отличается от научного метода Шерлока Холмса, насколько родственна «человеческому подходу» патера Брауна - героя честертоновских рассказов. Они оба слишком хорошо знают человеческую природу: соблазны и искушения, слабости и пороки, привязанности и порывы. И это и есть их первейшая стихия, точнее мутное море, где они ловят своих «оступившихся». Помните? - «У него нет метода, - задумчиво повторил чужие слова отец Браун. - Боюсь, что у них нет разума».
…все эти «странные выходки» отца Брауна: то он выливает на стену суп, то меняет в солонках соль и сахар местами, - абсолютно в духе проделок принца, но за малым исключением. Под рукой у принца вся королевская рать, под рукой у священника-детектива лишь зонтик. Интересно, что подумали бы они друг о друге, если б им довелось встретиться? «Благочестивый сыщик», - удивился бы принц. «Опасная добродетель, возведенная в гордыню», - подумал бы святой отец. И, правда, принц Флоризель как-то опасно близок к грани, разделяющей добро и зло. В сравнении с патером Брауном, он почти всемогущ. И по размаху приключений и по космополитизму своей натуры, его можно было бы именовать «принцем мира», что уж совсем недалеко от Князя Мира Сего. Флоризель играючи принимает участие в чужих судьбах, бедных одаривает деньгами, заблудших - наставлением. «Я знаю таких людей, - мог бы сказать о принце отец Браун. - По жизни они идут как по натянутому канату, и до поры стараются не думать о том, кто держит и натягивает канат».
Родись Флоризель не принцем, а простым смертным, какую дорогу бы он выбрал, имея те же таланты и ту же интуицию? Очень маловероятно, что стезю клерка или чиновника, скорее, путь благородного авантюриста вроде Арсена Люпена или вора и затейника Фламбо. Но слишком хорошее знание людей, вероятно, рано зародило бы в нем разочарование. Дальнейшая его судьба с большой вероятностью развивалась бы так. Напоследок он совершил бы какое-нибудь грандиозное и в высшей степени эффектное преступление - например, выкрал бы у генерала Ванделера алмаз Раджи, и сразился бы с Председателем Клуба Самоубийц на дуэли (ибо ненавидит бесчестную игру). Затем утопил бы алмаз в реке, и стал бы священником. Вроде отца Брауна.
