Day after day, I check my email only to find that mother DEAR has sent me another set of chain letter jokes from her work.
One is always a "Friends are forever, love trandsencds all sticky unpleasantness. Send this to 800 people and make new friends!"
One is always a "Two men walked into a bar. The third one got syphillis and died."
and then, there's the ever present. "Andy Rooney said on "60 Minutes" a few weeks back:
>Guns do not make you a killer. I think killing makes you a killer. You can kill someone with a baseball bat or a car, but no one is trying to ban you from driving to the ball game.
>I believe that if you are selling me a milkshake, a pack of cigarettes, a newspaper or a hotel room, you must do it in English! As a matter of fact, if you want to be an American citizen, you should have to speak English!
> It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God Therefore I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a problem in having "In God We Trust" on our money and having "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. Why don't we just tell the 14% to Shut Up and BE QUIET!!!
I can't freaking take this much longer. Mom knows that I'm very active politically. She knows that I was raised in a liberal atmosphere, with an education that focuses on unity and tolerance, compassion for those different from you, celebrating you heritage and the benefits of a free nation. And yet she still sends me hateful propaganda like this, almost as if she thinks an email will convince me that all my life i've been going about it the wrong way. Can you believe this is the moral role model who used to tell me that hating someone because they don't speak the same language as you is wrong, and that being a good person is more important than going to church everyday?
It's like, mom blames all minority groups for her betrayal by the man she loved, and she seeks revenge by buying in to all this anti-immigrant bullshit. I can forgive that considering her ordeals. But to push all this on me, who was born and raised in a multicultural, religiously open family where love exceeded common thought, is not only hurtful but pointless.
I love my mother dearly. But some of the insensitive things she says makes me want to spray her with a garden hose.
