meet eva, the love of my life.

she ignored the stitch in her side, the pain of her heart palpitating erratically against her ribs like a wild bird. trees streamed by her in a blur. the sounds of her boots thumping against the forest floor was soft against pine needles and moss, like she was wearing ballet slippers. she could run for miles, really, but this wasn't where she wanted to stop yet. or maybe she had already run for miles and her body was going to decide that this was exactly where she was going to stop. She skidded to a standstill, bent over her knees, panting. her tangled hair fell over her shoulders in a mess of unkempt brown hair. she closed her eyes, pushing all the random images out of her head until it was completely blank.

after months, she had been able to stop running and return to her friends, to her high school. she had been popular before. she still was, she guessed. but now..now she didn't fit in. she knew the whole "alone in a room full of people" was cliched and overly dramatic. but she also knew she wasn't kidding herself, she really was different.

violent.

a true survivalist. every once in a while, a person faces a situation---a life or death kind of thing---where they get to see what they're made of. eva faced that all the time, and she made the cut.

and on top of everything, she was a hard knock orphan who, by a series of lucky events, had gotten adopted into a wealthy suburban family. internally, she sneered at their wealth and how they took it for granted. but eva was a firm believer in not taking anything for granted, so she tried to think of her adoption as a blessing. you have to make the best of it, especially when your life is like a ticking time bomb. she never knew when it was going to be the end for her. which is why she tried hard not to think of gabriel's face. it would only make her head straight back home, and that was the worst mistake she could make. the sounds of twigs breaking on the forest floor made her stand straight up, alert, like a dog whose trained to hear intruders. she spun around, her pulse quickening pace again. she thought she was miles away from any other living soul.

she knew now that she had been wrong. maybe she should have run a little farther.
