Retrospective

Bearing with my tradition of writing at irresponsibly late hours instead of sleeping, I decided that I was due a retrospective. I realize that just about everyone who reads this (all 4 of you), I have talked to in the last week, and that your conversations actually form the basis for this entry, so I doubt any of this will be new material. All four of us, huh? Retrospectives seem to be a common theme of late (I'm proof of that). Don't apologize for rants--they're good, and healthy, and necessary.

I'm proud of you for finishing well. And I'm excited to see what comes next.

the past and the future anonymous May 19 2007, 03:01:20 UTC
Here's the second of four, chiming in.

The only real mistakes are those from which you learn nothing. You are now entering a transitional period, which may encompass graduate school, work you like and work you don't like, relationships, experiences. When you come out of it, you will again be a different person, and the path of your life will be clearer. Looking back on this period of your life from its conclusion, say, at age 28 or 30, what do you want to be able to say you did, thought, questioned, experienced, shared, accepted, learned, hoped, cried over, saw as ridiculous, valued as worthwhile no matter the cost or effort, challenged, laughed at. Let the future, and ultimately death, be your advisor. I say again, read Carlos Castaneda, and learn about The Mood of the Warrior. Then go find your own Path with a Heart. mom

Better Person? anonymous May 19 2007, 03:21:24 UTC
I don't think "better person" is the issue. You are already a caring, socially conscious, gracious, well mannered young man. If you mean you haven't accomplished everything you wanted, have been slothful at times, done less than you were capable of, are an underachiever - well, that's what growing up is about, and step 1 is to understand your shortcomings, such as they are ( ... )

I continue to be impressed by the things that you think and the way you express them, and I would define you as one of the better friends I have had--and one of the more interesting--which is all the more remarkable because siblings are, for some unknown reason and probably the fault of some unhappy psychologist, expected to disagree or to outright hate one another ( ... )
