Trade Wars 2002 !!! (Super)AwesomeBBSYes

Edit: I had an erroneous entry for "starting turns", which is an invalid setting.

Trade Wars 2002 is a text-based, sci-fi style space trading/strategy game. You play a starship captain trying to make his or her fortune by exploring the galaxy, trading at various star ports, managing planets, improving your ship, and of course a bit of the old combat (in SPACE!). It's from the early '90s, and it's fucking awesome. It's limited to a certain number of turns (actions) per day per player, so you won't have to devote your entire life to the game in order to keep up. The number of turns we're allowing per day

If this sounds interesting to you, you may consider reading some of this tutorial so that you'll have some idea of how the game is played:

http://www.outpost-4.com/tradewars/index.php?option=content&pcontent=1&task=view&id=70&Itemid=115

Until the official game starts, we will be running a practice game which allows a very large number of turns per day. Once the official start of the game happens, the universe and all of its contents will be wiped. You should take some time to try the game, see if you like it, and learn how to play. It won't count against you.

Instructions for accessing our server:
In order to connect you'll need a telnet client. You could use command line telnet, putty (for windows), or even a MUD client. I believe there are also some Trade Wars helper programs out there which you could potentially use to make complex scripts if you wanted. You must connect to our BBS in order to access the Trade Wars 2002 game (it's easy).

For Windows telnet (it sucks):
1. Click: Start
2. Click: Run
3. Type: cmd
4. Type: telnet
5. Type: open tradewars.dridus.com 2002
Windows telnet note: The backspace key within TW2002 is Ctrl-H, and Windows Telnet's backspace key cannot be changed, as far as I know. You must type Ctrl-H to backspace.

Instructions for PuTTY (windows):
1. Download http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/puttytel.exe
2. Enter hostname as tradewars.dridus.com, and port as 2002
3. Select Protocol as Telnet (this may not be necessary with puttytel -- it's a putty setting)
4. Name the settings (perhaps as tradewars.dridus.com, or just TW2002) and click "save".
5. Change the backspace key to Ctrl+H by clicking the "Keyboard" panel, then checking the option for Ctrl-H sends backspace.
6. Go back to the session panel, select your TW2002 settings, click Load and then Connect.

Instructions for Telnet in Mac OS X:
1. Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
2. You'll see a prompt something like this: yourname:~ yourcomputer$
3. Type: telnet tradewars.dridus.com 2002
MacOSX telnet note: In Settings > Advanced, select Delete sends Ctrl-H

For more advanced clients:
Try a google search for mud client, or for trade wars helper. Please note that your client should support changing to send backspace/delete Ctrl-H

Instructions for accessing TW2002 from within the BBS interface:
Note: This may look a little complicated, but it's mostly just hitting enter a lot and answering some obvious prompts.

1. You'll be presented with a screen that says "Synchronet BBS for Linux..." and gives some BBS information, then prompts for Login
2. Type: new
3. It will ask if you have a color terminal. You probably do, unless using windows telnet. Hit Y
4. It will ask if you have IBM extended ASCII support. Hit Y
5. Enter the desired name for your Trade Wars 2002 character
6. Confirm your settings by hitting the Y key.
7. Scroll past the first 4 screen by hitting enter 4 times.
8. Enter a password (or keep the random default password if you're insane).
9. Hit Q to exit the settings menu.
10. Follow the prompts.
11. When it says "Enter number of bulletin to view...", hit ENTER
12. Hit N to skip reading your mail.
13. Hit N to skip searching groups.
14. Hit O for Online Program.
15. Hit 2 for games.
16. Hit 5 for Tradewars 2002
17. Hit T for Play Trade Wars

Game Settings:
Server: SuperAwesomeBBSYes
Hostname: tradewars.dridus.com
Port: 2002

Turns per day: 750
Starting holds: 20
Initial credits: 300
Sectors: 2000
Start time: 10pm EST, Friday September 19th

If you choose to play, I recommend starting on the first day if at all possible, or you will lose valuable turns relative to other players.

Rules:
1. There ARE known bugs in this game. If you read about some, or already know of some, please do not abuse them. Thanks!
2. We would prefer that you avoid using any triggers or other automated responses to the world, and automated bots are entirely disallowed. If you wish to use a program which would allow macros or compiling gameplay data automatically, we're not going to stop you (nor could we).
3. Don't be a jerk (unless it's funny). We're looking for everyone to have fun.
