There is an Aunt in the room and don't any of you forget it.

Janelle doesn't count as family until she has a child? Or a daughter? (I'm assuming she and Owen are married.) Would a son get this sort of fuss, or is this just for girls?

Is this character the same as Jaenelle from King(Maker) Cake, and if so, was that before or after this? I'm guessing before?

And Aunt Ruan was from the other side of the family (or rather, not from the maternal line), and not quite that sort of Aunt -- is that an oversight, or part of Eva's point in saying that they all have two families?

Janelle doesn't found as family until she has a kid, yes. (She & Owen are married).

Yep, same Janelle. This is after that story.

Aunt Ruan was part of this side of the family, the maternal line.

Oh! I got my names mangled. Ruan was dealing with Tansy's stuff, where Tansy was her aunt on her father's side (and also unmarried and childless and full of magic, but ... different tradition). My error.

No worries! This family is a massive tangle.

First, I really like this setting.

Second, I love the gifts-for-the-baby : it's right out of a fairy tale. Most of the gifts even sound useful!
