Buffy doesn't strike me as fitting into the same category as the Thornes somehow but I suspect their first fight would tell them that Buffy isn't all shoe shopping and frivolity. Also, she does have a Doom, so to speak.

On the other hand, I'm sure that Doug is way cuter than Riley. (Bad thoughts have just hit me about the Dr running Riley's program....)

I personally think they had things set up so that the Slayers weren't likely to get old enough to tell them where to go.
