« Ah ! mon cher Pangloss ! »

On my way to get a library card from the main branch of the New York Public Library today, I was walking past the shiny marble version with the lions out front, and noticed a sign for an exhibit on Candide. My love for the philosophes of the French Enlightenment is vast and glowing, and I've read Candide three times - twice in the original French, once in English - so basically it sounded HIGHLY RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS and I went in to check it out.

THE SALIENT BIT:
Candide was received by a literate public eager to respond with stories of their own. These early forms of fan fiction demonstrate the unpredictable social life of a book after its publication. One reader might defend Leibniz against Voltaire’s satire, or export the characters to another political debate. Another reader could ignore the philosophical context altogether and send Candide to the Orient, as Thorel de Campigneulles did in his Second partie in 1760, which was often printed alongside the original as a sequel.

...WHAT.

So, next on my to-do list: FANFIC WHERE CANDIDE AND PANGLOSS GET IT ON IN THE BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE GAY ORGIES.

EN FRANÇAIS, MES SALOPES.

*stabs self in the brain*

NOTE: I just realized I never replied to any of the comments on my last entry. WTF, SORRY FOR BEING A JERK.

vtf is this i don't even, real life sucks, holy shit no one cares
