#027; movie junkie

i know, i know - i suck! i tell y'all i'll be around more often and then i disappear for another 2 weeks :P but hey! in my defense, i've been really busy with work and my social life has skyrocketed too, so um, yea. sorry :D

i finally have the results to my human flesh vs. breast milk poll though. thanks to everyone who participated - some people were voting until the middle of last week! apparently this is how you feel:- 25.9% would eat human flesh for survival
- 74.1% would drink breast milk for survival

- 19.6% would willingly eat human flesh
- 80.4% would willingly drink breast milk
AWH MAN. Y U NO LIKE HUMAN FLESH? i guess that means more for me though, huhaha! now i'll know what rations to procure for the impending zombiecapolypse :D

aside from working and being a social butterfly, i've been watching a lot of movies. here are mini-reviews of flicks i've seen this month:

1) drive angry 3d: starring nicolas cage, amber heard.

OKAY, STFU. i forced juliet_a and spacecowboy310 to accompany me, and i went knowing the movie was going to be ridiculous. after all, the premise is "a man returns from hell when his granddaughter is kidnapped by the man who killed his daughter". HYUK. but i've always had a soft spot for nic cage, amber heard is REALLY HAWT†, and the movie features sexy classic american cars. in fact, dean and sam would've fit into the plot quite well :D *dreams of cage & heard cameoing in a future ep of supernatural and sighs happily*

it delivered exactly what i'd hoped for - a nonsensical plot, some slick action sequences, lolarious dialogue, cage being super cool [shuddupshuddup] and a sexy heroine. the 3d special fx were actually pretty kickass and seamless too. I WAS QUITE ENTERTAINED. and yes, I RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS OF MINDLESS FUN :D

† omggggg amber heard is in this random old ep of criminal minds that i'm watching right now! and she strips down to a swimsuit and kisses reid breathless. omggggg i dunno whether i'm more jealous of matthew gray gubler or her ♥___♥

2) the adjustment bureau: starring matt damon, emily blunt, john slattery.

this one's based on phillip k. dick's short story, the adjustment team. i went in expecting a neat concept and a predictable ending, and that's pretty much what i received. while the story was just..okay, the universe holds a lot of potential, and i'd definitely be interested in reading fic that explores all the possibilities. i was a lot more interested in the adjusters than the lead couple, and i'm disappointed [but unsurprised] that the film didn't explore that part of the plot in more detail. also, i found it quite irritating that none of the adjusters were female. WHY IS THAT? i wasn't complaining at seeing john slattery and the other adjusters running around in well-tailored suits, but i would've liked to see their female counterparts as well. hmph. also, the ending was very anticlimactic. i feel like the writers could've achieved the typical ending and still delivered a twist. or better yet, given us an atypical ending :D [but that probably would've displeased the target audience, i dunno]. i plan on checking out the book sometime soon though, and will let you know if i feel any differently about the original source material :]

3) beastly: starring alex pettyfer, vanessa hudgens, mary-kate olsen.

oh gawd. this was juliet_a's revenge for being forced to watch drive angry 3d, and let me tell you - THE PUNISHMENT DID NOT MATCH THE CRIME. pettyfer is incredibly easy on the eyes, but his good looks couldn't make up for this insipid remake of one of my favourite fairytales. the dialogue was stupid, the acting was incredibly painful [ughhh pettyfer can NOT act], and the plot had too many wtf-inducing moments. so yeh. NOT WORTH IT. just find a youtube video that splices together all of pettyfer's scenes, and watch them on mute.

4) limitless: starring bradley cooper, robert de niro.

normally i go into a blind rage whenever i see bradley cooper - he just REALLY ticks me off with his douchebag face, yknow? so i had some pretty strong reservations about this movie, even though i found the concept intriguing :P but juliet_a managed to score us some free tickets to an advance screening, so i decided to give it a try, and i'm glad i did. while the plot does have some holes, i'm quite pleased with the execution. the dialogue is smart, the cinematography is fucking brilliant, and i didn't want to constantly punch cooper in the face. QUEL MIRACLE! in fact, he does a pretty awesome job of transforming from one persona to another. i also like the conclusion. apparently the book ends differently, and on a darker note, so i'm pretty sure i'll like it even more than i enjoyed the film :)

5) insidious: starring patrick wilson, rose byrne.

another one i got free advanced screening tickets to, woohoo! i actually met the directors too :) this is by the guys who made paranormal activity, which i consider one of the most boring horror films ever, but the trailers looked sufficiently creepy, so i figured i'd give it a try. plus, free tix, yo :P i liked how insidious didn't rely on gore and shock value to scare the audience. i love it when horror movies use nifty camera work and sound fx to get their point across, and i'm particularly fond of instances where they don't show you everything - b/c my brain is capable of creating extremely fucked up scenarios :P so uh, hitchcock films? loooooooooooooooove :D sadly, it wasn't as scary as i'd hoped it would be :/ there are some scenes that made me uncomfortable, and the ending was interesting, but a lot of it was predictable. idk, maybe some of you will find it more frightening than i did!

6) sucker punch: emily browning, abbie cornish, jena malone, vanessa hudgens.

watched this one this afternoon. i wasn't expecting a whole lot besides the visuals so i wasn't really disappointed? this is either a silly movie or one that's trying to be very clever. in both cases, it's visually stunning - the special fx are wicked cool, and the girls are absolutely gorgeous. critics are saying it's the kind of anime/steampunk softcore porn that young guys wank to, and while that may be true, it doesn't detract from the eye candy :PPP

SEVERAL PLOT HOLES THOUGH. unless zach snyder was trying to go the clever route [and if you'd like to discuss this further, i'd be more than happy to do so in comments], in which case, he still didn't do a good enough job. i wish he hadn't written this himself, and had instead asked a better writer to collaborate with him, b/c then it could've really been a fantastic product.
