Last night, I suddenly re-remembered my high school freshman English teacher, the one who made such a significant impact on me. I had subjected him to not only my insatiable grammar curiosity (purposefully coming up with questions, usually about the difference between two similar words like "affect" and "effect"), but also my horrific 900-page, never-ending Alexander Wolfe RPG fantasy and an even worse fantasy story so bad the characters mention their attribute rolls. ^_^;
I can still see the day clearly. I was in my 8th-period class (2D art) and my English teacher asked for me to step out into the hall--he had tracked me down. English was first period.
Anyway, he just wanted to give me a tiny book by Strunk and White, a well-known publication called The Elements of Style. Inside, he had written me a note: "Don't ever stop writing."
I realized, last night, that I owe him a published novel. I will not rest until I pay back his trust, his faith in me, his encouragement. I wrote him a thank you when I was in college, but now I want to write him a thank you in the form of success.
So this is what I vow: I am going to publish something, and in the front, there will be a dedication to him, and I will send him that book.
Because he changed my life. And maybe, when he sees my book, I might change his.
Just for future me.
