Whilst cleaning and working on my car today, I discovered something a little unsettling.
In the trunk, underneath the mat where the spare tire and carjack are kept, I found a small pile of refuse. I picked through it to discard it, thumbing through a bolt, old tape, a few hole plugs, dirt/pebbles, and two other things. One was a tiny picture, about the size of my thumb, but shorter, of a young woman. The other was a small newspaper/magazine clipping of one word: "death."
Well, this chilled me. Made me think all sorts of stories, especially with the superstitious Hmong people I know. I have no idea why it would be amidst garbage in the back of my car. My sister and brother-in-law owned that car for years before I did, and I think they bought it down south somewhere from a used car lot. Actually, it's from a Tousley Ford up here.
I discarded it, with my parents scoffing at my writerly drama, and even my more-easily-spooked husband expressed skepticism when I mentioned being haunted or potential voodoo...but then, he denies things more often when he's creeped out, that is true.
If I look in the review mirror one day and see that girl's face...
Well, makes for a cool story idea. NaNoWriMo material!
