Dad has died, in hospital, in California. We had just decided, yesterday, to stop the interventions and take him home, but he didn't last that long. (He did last twenty years longer than we would have predicted twenty years ago, and he had quite clearly finished.)

This seems a good moment to dig out That List.

Ten things. )

Wow. I'm not sure what else to say but that!

And, you know, sorry, too.

That does sound like a life thoroughly lived.

Wow. What a life! I'm particularly intrigued by the ice on the desert island....? Jif was once reported dead by a bedder too, but not in the master's lodge!

I'm sorry.

They ran the ship aground in the Florida Keys (this was the only research vessel of the University of Jamaica, and uninsured; they were going to insure it with the proceeds of the three week lease). It was a concrete hull, so when you beach it on coral it disintegrates and is a total loss. They got everyone off, I think by rubber dinghy in rough sea, and there was a GET THE FUCKING RUM moment and they got the rum off, and they rescued the fridge, and they had it all set up on the beach when the coastguard turned up expecting to arrest them. All very British.
