I agree that it is foolish, but there is nothing we can do to fight against it, now. I am unsure as to how we proceed from here.

You said yourself - we fight. If my family is to continue to supply the knights with the best armor and weapons, I will need more materials. It will not be long before trade routes will be constrained.
