Dear Academic Life,

I know that we've had a bumpy relationship over the years, we've had our highs and our lows, and we've been through alot. One would think that it would bring us closer together, even. I mean, last year's university was just beautiful, remember? Remember all the essays I scored high 80's and 90's on? Remember that?

So, I have to ask, what the fuck is going on this year? Did I forget your birthday or something? I mean, so far, I have averaged in my essays at a 70. The 75's and such that you gave me were tolerable, I'm even willing to swallow the odd 70. But tonight, I recieved a SIXTY EIGHT. A SIXY EIGHT PERCENT. ON A HISTORY PAPER. That is unacceptable. Please tell me, why have you scorned me so?

Yours,

AL

Seriously, I just recieved a 68% on a US History paper. Hell, it wasn't even about the United States, it was about Britain and France and the Seven Year's War. And the thing is, I didn't lose marks on my knowledge, either. On the whole, the marker seems to have liked what I had to say. The only reason why I lost so many marks, that I can deduce, is that he completely tore the paper apart, as far as mechanics go. More specifically, he said the tone of voice i used was "too informal." Upon reviewing my paper, and upon having someone read it before marking, there were no instances where the tone of voice I used was informal. In fact, I was told that it read like a piece written in the Enlightenment Era. I take my writing seriously, and have considered myself to be quite good at the formal voice, without sounding too stuffy; I write good enough to hope to be taken seriously, but also try to write so people can read what I have to say.

If you're wondering, yes, I am challenging this mark, because I find it insulting on two levels. The first should be obvious, the whole "informal voice" situation. The second, is the fact that it's a 68. Two mere percent from being a B- paper. To use an analogy, it's like dangling a big steak in frong of a hungry dog, but all he can grab are pieces of fat.

More on this situation, as it develops.
