I’m officially on my own. I’ve been moved into my new apartment in Ottawa and most things are set up in my room. The weird thing is that I still don’t feel like I live here, it’s just like I’m in a hotel by myself and all of my things are here.
Mom, Dad and I left for Ottawa on Saturday. Thankfully we were able to borrow the Cornfield’s truck or else I don’t know how else we could’ve gotten all my things here. I know I only had to bring things for my room and bathroom, but it all added up very quickly. We didn’t even have any furniture but the truck was still full. Ryan wasn’t able to come with us because of work, but we’re used to the goodbyes and the long distance so it’s okay. In another eight months we won’t have to do it anymore. On a lighter note, Ryan finally got a job! He’s going to work as an assistant to a physiotherapist in Gananoque. He’ll have full hours, benefits and a job that’s actually awesome. He’s pretty happy. Because he has to drive to Gan every day he even plans on getting a car soon. That way he’ll be able to visit too.
So when we arrived at the apartment Kelly greeted us and let us in. Thankfully John and Jocelyn arrived just in time to help us carry boxes upstairs. Otherwise the whole process would have taken much, much longer with just the three of us. The apartment was very nice! I love the set up of my room (large room with a walk-in closet and half bathroom)! The only downfall was that the subletters that were living there in the summer didn’t do a great job of cleaning up when they left. So the family spent the afternoon cleaning up the whole place and now it pretty good!
That night we headed back to Almonte to visit Nanny. We had dinner and went to bed early after a long day. The next day we had planned to get some grocery shopping done in Almonte and taking it to the apartment and do some cleaning. The morning was kinda frustrating, waiting for everyone to get ready was taking longer than I thought. We didn’t get to the apartment until much later than planned and didn’t get too much done. Later in the afternoon we returned to Almonte for a barbecue at John and Jocelyn’s. I had to savour all the food I could since it was my last home-cooked meal for a while! I came back to Ottawa that night with Casey and Skyler and had to say goodbye to Mom and Dad. I had to hold it together because I could see Dad tearing up, but I got out okay. I felt kinda strange walking into the apartment and couldn’t imagine not going home for eight months. I know the feeling will pass.
I spent the first night by myself. It was nice to settle in and get all my stuff together before meeting Hamida. I probably would not have made a good impression in such a frustrating situation. Ryan lent me a TV he had and it made it much less lonely. So I spent the night setting up and watching TV…in my room! It’s my first time ever having a TV in my room (not to mention video games). It’s all very exciting!
The next morning I ventured over to campus to get some things done. It was hard to know what to do since I didn’t have the internet to help me. I figured the library would be the best place to go first since they would have the internet. It didn’t help that they were closed when I got there, but I got some help from a student and went to Tabaret to get my student card first. I was also able to get part of my OSAP done there also, which was helpful. Then I was able to get my bus pass (also very helpful) and I had a good conversation with another girl in line. After, I returned to the library and made sure I had everything done when my parents called me. Thankfully I had put my phone on vibrate. Then I beat the rain home and spent the afternoon in. Later today Hamida will be arriving and we’ll finally meet. I’m sure we’ll get along but I’m still nervous. I made some jello ahead of time as a welcoming gift. Another thing is that she’s coming with her boyfriend…who is apparently a somewhat famous actor. If I had the internet right now I’d totally IMDB that shite.
Note: After meeting Hamida and Mazin, who are both very, very nice, I officially have internet!
Hamida and Mazin both arrived this evening and I helped with the move in. I had a good long chat while they set up and based on tonight I think we're going to get along well! This looks like it's going to be a great year. Tomorrow is my orientation day for teacher's college and Wednesday...hold your breath...is my DAY OFF. In my four years of Queen's I never had a single day off and now, assuming nothing happens, I'll have all my Wednesdays off! And it just so happens that Hamida has that day too. So my official first day of classes start Thursday. We'll see what happens then...
Note: On another side note, "celebrities" in the title also refers to my aunt Jocelyn shopping at the grocery store and running into Carrie Underwood! She said they were both in the produce section and they just smiled at each other.
