The Patriots and Redeemers in Japan just about fried my brain. I don’t think I’ll be continuing with it. First of all, the blurb on the back is somewhat misleading, as this is not really a history book as much as a really long historiographical essay. Even so, the writing jumps back and forth between clear and completely incomprehensible. It’s not even just jargon, which is fine with me, I read academic publications, I know you have to insert ‘discourse’ in there somewhere to get grants. It’s the annoying tendency to complicate your phrases when it’s totally unnecessary. I should have stopped at the ‘reservoir of circumstances’. The last straw was a section entitled ‘A Matrix of Motivational Determinants’. Ggaaahh. Back on the shelf you go.
Tonight I have to do battle with my bank and then go to the library to pick up a couple of books on hold for me (including something by Catherynne Valente, very exciting).
