He stared down near his feet in absolute horror, a strong emotion that even those without hearts could feel if the fear was intense enough. After all, one did not need a heart to feel the electric chills run down the spinal cord, or feel the fine hairs rise on tingling skin. The blood was so very bright and so very red, slowly spreading along the dirt, forever staining the ground.
I love you.
So she had said.
He gaped at her, his crystalline green eyes astonished, the rest of his expression twisted with an emotion that was part disbelief, part disgust. He ran a hand through his spiky crimson hair, only because he would probably go insane if he didn’t move and prove that this was just a dream. For those like him no longer had the ability to dream.

Wasn’t it just moments ago that she was grinning at him in that playful, flirty way of hers? Merely five minutes before now, her indigo eyes were shining up at him brightly, twin dark sapphires blazing with feelings for him that he could not return.
Now she was lying there…just…lying there. Burgundy strands of hair that were once so voluminous and glowed red against the sun now had fallen listlessly over her ashen face. Her pink lips were parted slightly as a trickle of blood ran teasingly from the corner of her mouth.
I love you.
He had proceeded to tell her that he did not have the heart to love her back.
Silly, you don’t know? Hearts are meant to be given away.
Before he could contradict her, tell her not to patronize him with her naiveté, she had opened her coat to reveal the deep incision in her breast, the heavy crimson color of her skin, making him realize that her eyes had been bright with not only a foolish love for him, but also the agonizing physical pain that she had just inflicted upon herself.
Take my heart…It’s…for you…
And then she was just lying there. In a pool of her own blood. A gaping hole in her chest.
It had been five minutes.
And somehow her heart was still beating in her outstretched hand.
