CHARACTER INFO
Name | Edward Elric
Series | Fullmetal Alchemist
Canon Point | Episode 48 of the 2003 anime, right before Envy takes Al.
Reference | http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fullmetal_Alchemist
Age | canonly 16, about 19 after his stay in Purg (characters don't physically age in Purg so he'd need to be aged in game)
Gender | Male
Suitability | I ... don't think this applies, because mentally Ed's ... almost 20? And would be aged up, at least to 18 - if not to match his mental age, upon arrival.
Appearance | http://13thousand.deviantart.com/art/Edward-Elric-14051638, after any aging http://www.insanejournal.com/allpics.bml?user=allofitmatters.

Personality |

The blond's personality is difficult to sum up in a few words. Confident as he is, Ed carries a lot of guilt and insecurity in all of his cockiness. As much as his determination and stubborness can be related to the trials he goes through during his childhood, there is evidence to support it being an inherent part of Ed's personality, despite this. Edward blames himself for the human transmutation and the disastrous results it caused - even though Al assumes the blame as well. Although rather self-absorbed in a number of ways - his goal and desires tend to come first, regardless of the warnings given to him about their danger - doing what's right is a big priority for him.

First and foremost, his strongest trait could easily be labeled as loyalty - as he has an intense bond to his brother that others might call obsessive, always thinking of him first, even at the risk of the older boy's own life. Ed's biggest weaknesses can also be found in his brother, for this very same reason - or in his pride, as it doesn't take much to rile him up if the right buttons are pushed, which an enemy can easily use to distract him, if they don't get too cocky. Quick to offer himself and sacrifice anything to fix or save his brother, Ed never thinks of his own health or safety when it comes to protecting Al. He'll gladly endanger himself to protect a loved one, or innocent drawn into the cross-fire, but for his brother he'd die without a thought. No matter how level-headed he may be in other situations, Al in danger automatically erases any trace of rational thought, instantly putting him in just as much - if not more - danger. An example of this is also demonstrated with Winry in the manga, when he jumps between her and Scar, without hesitation.

Despite the maturity that Edward develops at a young age - he is also occasionally capable of extremely childish behavior. Although the older he gets the less prone he is to these outbursts, comments on his height or attempts to get him to drink milk are generally responded to with negative reactions. In the case of this variation a person is more likely to get a rise out of them if they intend to than by merely mentioning one of Ed's typical canon triggers. He's had several years to grow and mature in Purg, which has toned his personality down a bit when it comes to a few of the lesser serious issues. Despite being internally optimistic and potentially naive at times Ed is also a realist and can be very cynical, sometimes having a total disregard for authority.

Edward can be both sensitive and sweet, and sarcastic and bitter; he's quick to jump to the defensive, and snap at anyone - even those close to him - especially if they touch on one of his more sensitive subjects. He has an ego that boasts of self importance, but he carries an ill-concealed insecurity about a lot of things under that attitude. As much as he seeks praise and recognition with strangers, around those he trusts it's much more obvious that he feels unworthy of any ego stroking. Ed shoulders the blame of everything that's gone wrong in his past, and given time to dwell on it, can let the guilt of previous actions consume him.

» If you are taking your character from another RP game, please give us a brief summary of their history, as well as how it affected them and their personality.

Ed spent three years in Purg being subjected to the will of the gods and actually the land itself, which could mean anything from a genderswap event to experience life in 'the other's shoes' to floods, droughts and famines. He made friends with lots of people during his time there, but only became close to a select few. Eventually Ed was left the general store by a friend that returned home - which was the main source of supplies for newcomers and anyone that chose to remain on the entry level. He helped employ anyone that needed a job and offered repairs where the primitive tools in Purgatorium would not suffice to fix a problem.

Although characters were told that they were taken there to repent for their sins, characters went home with no evidence of improving and characters that did improve stayed (sometimes for years), eventually leaving the remaining residents to believe that redemption had nothing to do with getting out.

The experience opened Ed's eyes to possibilities beyond his wildest dreams. Animals that could talk who weren't chimera, living side by side with homunculi that on his own world had tried to kill him. Lessons were learned about cooperating with the enemy, as in some cases people were divided into teams and pitted against each other in events. He watched friends (canonmates and otherwise) come and go during his time there, which not only hurt him but eventually made him grow almost ... indifferent to that just being the reality of Purg. Sometimes people leave, and they don't always come back.

I think the changes that Ed endured in Purg quieted him, almost in the same way as Conqueror of Shamballa. He was taken away from his home world, never knowing what happened to Al - and it was two years before he saw his brother again, which made him sort of distant from most people and resigned to being stuck there. Having been given the general store changed things though, just as in the movie Ed realizes that the brothers have to live for more than just the two of them. After taking over the general store - and then Al joining him - Ed was more involved with all people of Purg. As part of the job of the general store was making welcome baskets for the new members and greeting them at the temple upon arrival. Ed started to branch out more and worry about the well being of the general public instead of just his close friends, making him strikingly similar to a end of movie-verse Ed without the canon update.

Possessions | Both Ed's duster and pocket watch were returned to him during events in Purg, but since he doesn't tend to wear either so much anymore he'd have them in a suitcase, along with some photos if that's permissable.

Character Abilities/Powers |

The concept of alchemy is that given the proper matter and knowledge, anything can be achieved. Alchemy is a science, based on the idea that anything can be made, transformed, or 'transmuted' into another object as long as they share the same base elements, and properties. Something can not be gained from nothing, alchemists can not use more than what they are provided with, and the idea behind this is often referred to as the 'law of equivalent exchange'. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. The most familiar form of alchemy known in the real world is the medieval concept of turning iron to gold - an act strictly forbidden in the country of Amestris, second only to one other. The law that transmutations can not be performed to bring a deceased human (or animal, for that matter) back to life. Despite the concept that there seemingly, is no limit to what power alchemists can obtain with this knowledge it has been proven on several occasions (although none are known of, due to the forbidden nature) that human transmutation simply does not work. Life only flows in one direction, nothing can be done to reverse this and return a creature that has passed to the previous state of living.

To create the energy required to form a transmutation alchemists must make a circle, otherwise referred to as an array. Circles have various symbols in them to aid with specific transmutations, and also in a way reflect the personality of the person who drew it. In the case of alchemists who have performed the forbidden, and attempted to resurrect a human - thus seeing the gate (otherwise referred to as Truth.) - drawing circles are no longer necessary to transmute matter. Rather these alchemists have the knowledge provided to them that the necessary runes required to transmute are considered (within) their own body. Because of this, alchemists in this case need only make the circle, itself. Since they can use their own body for this, rather than having to draw one out physically, it is almost always the case that these alchemists simply clap their hands together to form the circular shape required for a transmutation. Others have noted this motion to appear as praying, but the circle itself is visible in the shape that their arms make once their hands are closed together - making them the circle necessary to transmute.

Edward and Alphonse Elric were raised by their Teacher to understand that body and mind must be trained together. While studying to improve their alchemic skill and knowledge they also underwent martial arts training, to tone both their bodies and their minds. Additionally in situations that he can't or would rather not use the blade he creates from his own automail arm - Edward's weapon of choice more often than not is a long spear he makes, usually decorated with a dragon head.

Weaknesses/Fears |

Emotionally, his weaknesses and fears are best demonstrated through his brother. Ed has a crippling fear of losing his brother, and an overbearing guilt for what he perceives as his own fault - Al losing his body. Ed's concern for the younger boy's well being can be life threatening in certain situations as it can completely wipe out Ed's thought process. This is touched upon the second paragraph of the personality section above, but if more information or better examples are required, I can do that.

Ed's automail can also be a huge weakness for him - although generally it puts him at an advantage over his opponent. Someone clever enough to remove the limbs or knowledgable enough to reattach them to cause him pain could easily use the alchemist's limbs - and best weapons - against him.

Requested Village | Muir
NPC mini-plot | I'm fine with this in general, but is it going to be something we can opt out of and/or have advance warning for? There are some days that I'll be working long hours (generally two in a week) and I don't want to hold any plot up by being involved on a day I can't really focus on it.

http://alchemyxfreak.livejournal.com/12697.html?thread=111257#t111257

I think shows the wide variations to Ed's personality and reactions well. some of the comments lost a bit of impact when the paid time ran out and the icons switched to default.

Also, a short sample in this setting:

[The device that had been left with him for the network was definitely new. It was portable, which made it easier to use than having to find a terminal every time he'd want to make a post. That would be useful if there were any huge floods, storms or fires in his future.

It was a curious little machine, he could imagine Winry having a fantastic time taking it apart to see what made it tick... Ed took some time to study it - figure out how it worked - before switching it on with a frown that might resemble a scowl to viewers. He sounds wholly unimpressed, obviously walking as he talked - not entirely aware it was recording as a video, simply because he'd never seen one that worked that way before.]

Nice welcoming committee this place has. I guess it beats a church. Does anyone want to tell me how seriously to take the story ....Arawn just told me? Is there anyone that's been here long enough to know how much truth is actually behind it?

[By the looks of the Network at least a few other people were on the same boat, new and confused by the message they were greeted with. Well, that much made sense, but he didn't recognize anyone from Purg - even those he did had been gone for so long, there was no way they were the same person.... Right?

So did that mean this actually was someplace completely new? .... Great.]

Third-person |

Well, this wasn't so bad. It was definitely a touch friendlier than the world he had just come from, but that didn't make him any less irritated over being stuck on some other world - yet again apparently - that wasn't his. There was always the possibility that this was still Purgatorium, just some new angle to further test him. Normally the first thing he'd want to do is find out who else was here, see if they knew anything and try to figure out what was going on. Considering how many times someone lost their memories or thought they were new to the place, that idea probably wasn't worth the hassle. Even if his friends were here, they might not be experiencing the same changes, and they might not even remember him at all.

The place they had him in was nice, at least. Nothing like the homes in Purg, where a person might as well be living right outside - there was even an extra bed - but Ed had other matters to worry about right now. That Arawn guy said that his alchemy would still work but he needed to at least test that theory, and apparently find a new job. If this was just another test of those gods or whoever they really put a lot of work into this one - nothing looked the same, and he had to start all over again from scratch. At least here he still had his alchemy, that gave him something to work with.

Ed had glossed over whatever was said about the X mark on his face, because at this point he was used to marks and changes - and the idea that he'd have to go out and find someone to do that with to remove it was a little overwhelming to think about, not that he was going to admit how flustered it made him - as if the blushing and stammering wasn't indication enough. So, like anything Edward was not prepared to deal with right away, he filed that information away for when he'd actually have to deal with it. Really, the first thing he should do is focus on exploring, figuring out where he was and the best direction to go in to stay on top of things. Not worry about some supposed 'mark' on his face that he had no evidence really existed there.

Might as well start from scratch. Arawn answered all of his questions straight forward enough - which was so unusual it almost seemed like a trap. Once he left, Ed made his way around the house that he apparently now occupied now. Poking his head into every room, opening every door and cabinet available to him, the blond kept himself ready for any attack. He was probably more surprised that none came, especially considering a glance out the window revealed various creatures roaming outside the same as he was used to. Sure they didn't look the same, but that didn't mean they were any less dangerous.

Once he'd covered the whole area Ed returned to the small closet supplied with various 'scrap' items. Perfect for him to test the limits of his alchemy on, and perfect for him to use should he come up short on supplies. After making some weapons to defend himself in this new environment, it was clear that his alchemy worked. The question at that point became whether or not it would last. Tomorrow, if everything stayed as he'd transmuted it he could start a repair shop, to earn money... that at least solved his problem for how to get by in the future. The question now was, how was he going to get through today with no currency?

He could always start fixing things for people sooner rather than later. If the transmutation didn't hold he had a few options. Hoping the people he fixed things for never found him again, for one - but there was always manual labor to make up for whatever money he did get out of it before the repairs fell apart. Deciding to test that theory too - repairs, rather than anything constructed from scraps and base materials - Ed dropped a glass vase on the floor. Clapping his hands to the floor he crouched down in front of it, pressing his hands to either side - satisfied as it came back together good as new. No strange side effects, no sign of weaknesses. Standing back up, Ed dusted himself off and set the vase back on the shelf he had knocked it from.

Before he did anything else, he was going to go check out his surroundings. After that he could make a sign for repairs, after years in Purg he'd just need to remember to charge this time so he didn't starve while here. However long that was going to be.
