[Vignette] Family secrets

Rielsath gives Lujayn a rather unwelcome bit of news. Or maybe it's just the midnight hour that has the rider grumbling about having to play nursemaid.

<< Ethian is here. >> It was a sudden awakening. Lujayn fumbled for the drawstring on her curtains, only to find that nighttime reigned and the moon was hardly visible above the wicked spires of High Reaches.

"You woke me up.. for this?" She hadn't seen her half-brother in over five turns, hadn't played with him in the nursery, really hadn't had much to do with the boy at all. She knew her father had another son.

<< Family, >> Rielsath pressed her rider, bursting with excitement. << You have a brother. Or more. Why don't you tell people? >> The sense of belonging, of home, is rich in her youthful voice. Vrianth, Wroth, Masoth. Even Jekzith, Iovniath, dragons she knows and sees as her own personal cohort.

"I do not have a proper brother, thank you, and can I go back to sleep?" Lu buried her head in the multitude of pillows, attempting to block out the mindvoice that could not be blocked by mere physical barriers. "It's different with humans. Just because he's my father's son doesn't have anything to do with me." She'd never told anyone she had any siblings, mostly because she didn't feel any real connections there. Not to mention the staggering age differences. Just flight babies. Her parents were never weyrmated, the relationship cordial but superficial at best. It didn't mean anything.

<< You should go to him in the morning. He's scared. He knows you're here. >> Images of knight in shining armor Lujayn rescuing the waiflike boy, storybook fantasies that-

"Stop," Lujayn hissed between her teeth, grumpy and sleepless. "We'll cross paths eventually. That's that."

The words stopped, but images continued to sift into her half-dreamlike state, a family she had separated from and this new hazard to her comfort zone. In the morning, she'd do something.
