Flower Arranging & Fraya

Mar 14, 2008 15:43

Who: Fraya, Lujayn
When: day 26, month 8, Turn 15
Where: Candidate barracks
Summary: Lu arranges flowers and Fraya bemoans her younger brother.

Lujayn is sprawled over her cot, a basket filled with colorful flowers to one side. A few blooms have been gathered into clusters, the clusters placed in spare glass jars, and the jars half-filled with sloshing water. Lu plucks at stems and rearranges them with little sense of art, apparently trying to even things out somehow.

Fraya is sitting in her cot, her fingers curled around what appears to be a letter. She looks conflicted, tugging at the strings to open the letter but not opening it. A pause and she slightly pulls it open but is quick to close it again. She shifts, uncomfortably, and then she finally slips open the letter reading quietly. A frown works onto her face and she stares for a moment before she continues to read.

Lujayn places a few tall flowers into one jar, which has become an assortment of summery yellow and orange. Satisfied with this one, at least, she rolls over to carry it carefully to a central table. Pushing it this way and that to observe the effect, she glances back at Fraya. "Do you like it here," Lu begins, but her mind is changed by the look on the girl's face. "Hey, what's the matter?"

Fraya groans softly, covering her face. "I'll write back, yes.. But /shards/, my brother is awful. He hogs attention and he just has to have attention on him somehow.. Just a big brat. When my parents aren't paying attention he tends to go pick on other people. I don't like him.." She sighs softly, "Somehow.. He just always ends up getting hurt too.. Maybe he'll behave because he'll get to see dragons hatch... I hope he will." Grumble. "He can be good /sometimes/... Sometimes... But not most of the time..."

"If I see him, I'll be careful," Lujayn promises, "You should have him do your chores, maybe that would keep him busy." She laughs, sifting through petals of blue and white, trying to prop up tiny blossoms to keep them from floating around. "The only thing I have to worry about is tripping on the sands, or having my robe stolen. Friends from Fort are coming, but none of them are bratty kids." A sympathetic shrug, willing to keep listening.

Fraya laughs, nodding her head. "Try to be. Don't want him to try and rile anyone up..." She trails off, laughing more. "Ah. I should say it's a rule for little brothers to do the chores when visiting a candidate. That way, little brothers can see what it's like being candidates for a day without actually being a candidate..." She trails off, grinning. "You won't trip if you watch your feet when you enter. And.. Everyone has their own robe so why steal yours?" Tilting her head slightly, she shrugs. "No point in trying to ruin the person's chances, because you're either it or you're not. I'd hide a second robe if you're really worried, Lujayn."

Lujayn chuckles, shaking her head. "I'm not. I just couldn't think of anything that would go up on par with rotten siblings. Had to at least try to outdo you." She makes a face, playfully throwing a flower at the other girl. "Maybe my robe looks better," She reasons. "But then Viviana has more to worry about. All the work that she put into it." Turning the jar critically, she purses her lips. "Do you think these should all go on the table? There aren't many decorative surfaces here, unless I put them on people's presses."

Fraya laughs, shrugging her shoulders. "I don't see why it'd be good to "outdo" me. I mean, a horrid little sibling isn't fun. At all..." She notes, giggling. "Viviana spent so long on her robe, I don't see why. We're not going to wear them again.." She notes, tilting her head slightly. "Hm. Just on the table, I'm not sure everyone would appreciate flowers on their press without asking first.. I mean, I'd walk in and wonder when I put them there."

Lujayn nods thoughtfully, rising to put it with the others on the table. There are three jars filled with flower arrangements, a jumble of winsome colors reaching out to soften the barracks' rocky walls and cramped quarters. She sighs. "Well, that's that. Maybe it will help everyone to relax. I know I've been having a hard time, especially since the dragonhealers keep saying how close the eggs are to hatching." There's more excitement than nerves in her face, though. "Maybe I'll put the leftover flowers on presses, just to confuse everyone." A wink.

Fraya sighs softly, shrugging. "Some people don't like flowers.. Maybe you should add weeds, too. That way someone who doesn't like flowers can see the weeds.." She flashes a playful grin before sitting up and digging through her things. "I'm going to go write my letter back to them.... If you put flowers on mine, I'd like red ones. They're my favorite." Another grin and with her writing tools the girl skips out.

Lujayn waves as Fraya skips off, laughing at the suggestion. She continues to pick at the jars of flowers, switching them around for a few minutes. After a pause she does gather the remnants from her basket: lost petals, flowers much too tiny for large arrangements, and sad brown leaves. Lu carries the assortment out into the bowl, scattering them as she goes with long, slow steps, until she disappears from sight.
