I'm working my ass off tonight so I can actually sit down and watch the inauguration tomorrow. I'm even thinking of going out and getting some Super Bowlesque snacks for it, even though deep down I know perfectly well that, historic occasion or not, I'm going to get bored fast with the amount of self-congratulatory politicking that goes on at these things. There's also the minor matter of wanting 95% of Congress out on their fat, useless backsides at the moment. I like Obama a lot, but I have the sneaking suspicion that America's economic recovery would go 500 times faster if some kindred spirit took the chance to lock Congress out of the Capitol building while they're all out on the Mall.
50 bucks says the phrases "We face many challenges," "A brighter tomorrow," and "Collective responsibility" are uttered multiple times. Memo to the political class of the United States: it's called rhetoric class. Take one.
I've begun a campaign of self-improvement for the new year and have embarked on a year's worth of classics I've never read. First up is Herodotus, The Histories, in the interests of practicing ancient Greek self-discipline and learning not to hire spearmen named Gyges. That's a sound lesson for us all.
