Nobody said it was easy
Oh its such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said that it would be this hard
Jo sat on the windowsill, looking out at the stars and thinking of what she'd left behind. When Cliff had asked her to go to the Amazon with him she'd said yes without a second thought. Now that the Doctor and the rest of UNIT had left, though, she had to fight the urge to follow them back to London. She loved Cliff and wanted to be with him, but she couldn't help feeling the Doctor needed her.
She sighed and rested her head against the window. She must have been to some of those stars, she thought, but now she'd never go to any more.
Cliff's voice broke the silence. "Jo?"
When she didn't answer, he came closer. "Couldn't sleep?"
She nodded and turned to him. "It's so quiet."
"You're in the country." He smiled. "You should be used to it by now."
"It's not that." She'd got used to sleeping pretty much anywhere - when you spent time with the Doctor it was a useful skill, since you never knew when you'd get sleep and when you'd have to run for your life. She'd slept perfectly well every night they'd spent here - except this one. "It's quiet because UNIT isn't here and there's no crisis going on." And the Doctor wasn't here.
"There's always a crisis somewhere in the world. We can find one if you like." He looked serious about it too, she noticed.
She smiled and reached out a hand to him, which he took. The feeling of her hand in his reminded her why she'd stayed. However, she couldn't tell Cliff of her doubts, as he'd only worry whether she really wanted to marry him. She did, although that was easier to remember when he was with her.
She slipped off her seat, let go of his hand and wrapped her arms around him. "Don't ever leave me."
"I won't," he said, into her hair as he pulled her close.
She could have happily stayed in his arms all night, but now she felt tired and yawned.
He pulled back to look at her and stroke her cheek with his fingers. "Why don't you come and sleep in my room?"
What she really needed was sleep - it was late after all - and she hesitated, unsure of what he was suggesting.
Guessing what her expression meant, he said, "Just sleep."
She smiled, glad she had decided to stay with him, and gave him a kiss. He took her by the hand and led her upstairs.
As long as Cliff was with her, she'd be fine. The Doctor could manage without her. Although perhaps in the morning, she'd telephone UNIT and make sure his next assistant was told how the Doctor liked his tea.
