I wanna know why I've always felt alone,
I wanna love. Why am I untouchable?
Fall had come to the campus. Trees were changing, the colors of death and blood vibrant and warm. Thousands flocked to New England to see the foliage change and yet so few acknowledged that what it signified was death. The death of seasons, the death of the year. It was a blazing tribute to the last ditch efforts of all that lived before Persephone's descent into Hades.
And like so many others, Caleb loved it as much as they did.
Taking up a place beneath a tree, his purpose that afternoon was to study while enjoying the crisp air and changing scents of the season. Yet all he could do was watch those around him. Friends roughhousing and laughing. Lovers sharing moments. It wasn't that long ago that Caleb was part of that life. He'd been surrounded by friends, had a girl he cared for, was the man to see and be seen with.
That had all seemed to end with his acension. He couldn't take the chance of becoming too attached. Even as careful as he was, the odds weren't good for a long and fulfilling life. It was more likely that, at best, he would die of old age at the ripe old age of fifty. If he was lucky. His friends were scattered to the winds. Just like he felt that afternoon sitting beneath a tree, tryin to work and instead thinking of a future that would never be as long as he would like.
