He is my favorite. He is my joy.

Donna didn’t leave the TARDIS often. There was a time she’d walk down to the stores; buy petit fours, little things for herself, just go for a walk. That was before the entire world had twisted, changed. That was before they had failed.

Not that it was obvious when one stepped out into the garden. Sure there were fewer boxes, open spaces where before there had once been friends, but to look up at the sky it was still the same. Standing there, beneath the sun and surrounded by the daily sounds of a garden full of spaceships and Martians, it was easy for Donna to not think about all that was missing. Beyond this solar system, there was nothing. If she let herself think about it, she’d wondered what had become of them. Were they all dead? Had they felt pain or, in a moment, had it all merely been gone as if it had never existed?

That was why Donna rarely left the TARDIS. Within, with the Doctor at her side, or usually working on the TARDIS herself, it was easy to pretend it was all the same. He still loved her. Donna was so very much in love with him. That much hadn’t changed. Some days it felt like it was the only thing that hadn’t changed, the only constant in the universe. Maybe, in the end, it was. Not just Donna and her Doctor but all of them. Maybe, in the end, the only constant that existed was the love between a companion and her Doctor.

It wasn’t the most comforting thought in the world but more nights than not, it helped Donna sleep.
