“Love and attraction.
It´s like sex and passion.
It´s two ends of a spectrum.
Are you a friend or a lover?
Now pick one or the other.”
- “Love and Attraction” by Darren Hayes
Chase picked up the cordless phone from the doctors’ desk in surgical ward and started dialling in Rogue’s number. “Chase, man, do my Clinic duty?” a voice from behind sounded, causing Chase to quickly slam his thumb down on the button to halt the call.
He turned around, finding his work mate, Carter, standing there holding out the surgical on-call pager. He raised an eyebrow at the man. “What’s the pager got to do with Clinic duty?” he snorted, making no move to take it. “I’m busy. Ask Foreman. He’s into making kissy faces at Cuddy’s arse this week. And last week. And the week before that,” he added with a smirk.
Carter shook his head. “You’re here. Come on, man! I have a hottie with a double-D cup waiting for me on campus! Busy with what?” He spotted the phone in Chase’s handed. “Ahhhh, calling your girlfriend?” he sniggered.
Chase nearly dropped the phone. “I- no!” he said, clearing his throat. “No… I was just…” He looked down at the phone. Was he calling his girlfriend?
“Boyfriend, then,” Carter pushed, still trying to offload the pager into Chase’s free hand.
“No!” Chase snapped and pushed Carter’s hand -and the pager- away. “And no.”
Carter leaned against the desk. “Come on, dude. Clinic, then? I’ll keep the pager, you take the Clinic,” he bargained. “Go on, call. We can chat when you’re done.”
Chase looked at him in exasperation. “I’m not calling anyone with you standing there listening. And you can stick your Clinic duty up your shiny butt. I’m busy… I have stuff to do.”
“What stuff? Eleanor in Maternity? Phwoar, she has an arse on her, doesn’t she? I thought you’d already done her though? Or was that Elisha?” Carter gestured to the phone. “I won’t tell. Who are you calling? Phone sex to an Aussie counterpart on the hospital budget. That’s my man!”
Chase shifted the phone from one hand to the other. “Just my…” He regained his composure and stuffed the phone back into the cradle. “I’m not doing any chicks here!”
Carter smirked. “So that was your girlfriend. You have that edge in your tone that says some hottie has you by the short and curlies.”
“She does not,” Chase automatically answered with a scowl, only realising what he’d said once it fell out of his far too loose lips. “She’s my…”
“Girlfriend,” Carter emphasised.
Chase scowled. “Friend… who’s a girl,” he said and turned to walk away. How high school. As he rounded the corner, he stopped and smacked himself in the head. “Idiot!” Why was it so easy to stay planted firmly in the shoes he was so used to wearing? Why couldn’t he admit it? Why couldn’t he say it?
“Because then it becomes real,” he mumbled to himself with a shake of his head as he walked away with his hands shoved deep in his lab coat pockets.
