Synagogue birdwatching

Apr 03, 2010 21:01

So the last couple weeks the drive to synagogue has been a bird-watching expedition by default, as we drive along the river for part of it, and the birds are migrating. But we also see various Minnesota birds too. Two weeks ago we saw several wild turkey hens a half mile from shul. Today we saw a Pileated Woodpecker fly in front of our car. Then during lunch I looked out the window and saw a very large sparrow scratching at the leaves outside. I checked online just now, and form the pictures it must be a migrating male fox sparrow, Passerella iliaca, heading north to Canada (picture at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Passerella_iliaca-001.jpg).
