2 The heat beating down Sylar waits for Chandra to meet him out on the sidewalk, a small suitcase on wheels at his feet. They were heading to Canada, going to visit one of the specials on Chandra's list and he suppressed his excitement and impatience barely.
"Hurry, hur -"
"So sorry, she was fiddling around with her hair..."
"I was not!" Frowning Sylar peers around the professor to see his tiny neighbour, Eden, behind. She's wearing a pale green dress and a large pair of sunglasses that hid most of her doll-like face. She was pulling a small suitcase after her. Suspicious he turns to Chandra who's also adorned with shades.
"Is she coming with us?"
"Yes, Eden's kindly agreed to lend us her car and her presence." Chandra turns to her and she smiles sweetly up at him. Sylar grits his teeth but puts a blank look on when she turns to face him.
"It'll save you money, instead of getting a rental. And I've always wanted to go to Canada!" Grinning at him she brushes past and he has to stop himself grabbing her. He didn't know what it was, she was polite and friendly but she aggravated him; always there when he tried to talk to Chandra, always interfering. And watching, watching with those eyes.
Smothering his displeasure he loads his luggage in the trunk and gets in the backseat, Eden at the wheel and the old man next to her.
"All buckled up Gabriel? Gotta be careful..." Huge, darkly teasing eyes peer at him in the rear view mirror until he clicks his lifebelt in with a sharp snap.
She's trying not to smile, she's always trying not to smile at me.

Four hours on the road and he was about ready to commit suicide. Visions beset him of jumping up from his seat and grabbing the wheel from her hands and plowing into a tree, off a bridge, anything to get her to stop talking to Chandra. They were ignoring him...
"I made some food for us but I don't know if it's any good..."
"Ah I'm sure it will be fine, whatever you've prepared."
"You're just saying that, you're to polite Papa."
Oh Jesus, God help me...
"What about you Gabriel? Hungry?"
Ravenous, actually.
"No, I'm fine. Thanks." Short to the point answers he'd been giving her and he sees her mouth thin before smiling, those penetrative eyes on him.
"Ok, if you're sure...Wanna play I Spy?"
Closing his eyes he pretends to be asleep before he has to join in but he can still hear them cheerfully playing along together and he stews in jealousy.
Keep it calm, almost there and I'll prove to Chandra I'm more special then she is.

"So this is different, isn't it?" Eden says suddenly, biting into her burger. For such a thin girl she could eat and eat. They were sat outside a burger bar, just on the Canadian border. Her efforts at feeding them, a wilted hot salad, had proved inedible and she had sheepishly suggested fast food.
Chandra looks at her, ketchup bottle in hand and Sylar looks up from his French fries, plastic straw clenched between his teeth as he sucked up almost flat cola. She chews quickly and swallows with difficulty. Don't choke now.
"Well you told me that you usually stalk-"
"Eden!"
She raises her palms, smiling mischievously at the blushing, affronted man. "Sorry. I mean you usually phone these people right? Why the more forceful approach?"
Chandra smiles and turns to Sylar who watches him carefully. "Well it was actually Mr Sylar's idea, wasn't it?" he goes no further, tilting his head at him so Sylar turns to Eden.
"Well he came to see me, the first time, instead of explaining everything over the phone. If he had done I would have thought he was crazy but I didn't, I gave him a chance." He smiles at the professor who nods his head modestly.
"So you're hoping this will work Mr Sylar?" She says around her straw, emphasising his moniker.
"Yes, I think it will." Eyes locked she doesn't look down but increases the intensity of her gaze. People can't usually look at me...
"Hu-hum! Yes well it's rather up in the air. But we'll never know unless we try. Shall we?" Sylar blinks to see Chandra on his feet, arm sweeping back to the car and he rises up quick. He felt, for just a second, like he was hypnotised. Eden grabs what's left of her meal and gets in the backseat with him, Chandra at the wheel. "Eden? You'll have to give me dir-"
"I can do it!" Sylar says suddenly, moving back from her as she clicks her belt into place and settles her half eaten burger on her knees, atop a napkin.
She smiles at him, eyebrow cocked. "GPS here will do it, seeing as I've got the map..."
He smiles back stiffly, hand out stretched. "Please?"
She puts a mock look of shock on, shoulders moving back. "I thought you knew everything?!"
"Apparently not." He hisses and her eyelashes flutter, her smile fading. Rising her shoulders she makes this oh well gesture with a bird like thrusting forward of her chin and pulls the map out from where she had been sitting on it. He takes it fast and unfolds it. "Thank you."
She just smiles and bites into her burger, mocking eyes on his the whole time.

Their twelve hour journey done they reach Sudbury at midnight and their hotel, prebooked. Well for him and Chandra...
Eden stands on tiptoes at the reception desk, looking slightly worried as a woman looks at a computer screen. It was the holiday season and they appeared fully booked. "I should have thought of this..." she whispers and pulls down the sleeves of her cardigan over her hands nervously. Sylar hovered behind her, watching her fidgety movements.
Finally the lady looked at Eden apologetically. "I'm sorry we are fully booked. The last two rooms went to your companions." He and Chandra had paid for twin beds. Eden slumps and they move away to let others pass, Eden taking a seat in the reception. She yawns widely and the chair seems to swallow her up.
Chandra looks down at her gently. "You can have my bed, I'll sleep on the couch, if there's one." But Eden is already shaking her head, sitting up with her hands trapped between her knees.
"No, you don't have to do that. You've been driving for hours and I've seen you wincing."
"Yes, well, not as young as you two..." Chandra begins to look at Sylar tentatively, hopefully.
Oh please don't suggest it, please, please -
"Gabriel, could you perhaps offer your bed?"
No! I could not! Turning to Chandra he smiles, shrugging his shoulders. "Sure." fuck!
"No, no really it's fine. I'm sure they're other places I -"
"Nonsense, it's well past midnight and you're tired." Chandra rises up and and pulls Eden up with him, like a fussy parent and Sylar stares between them. She's forcing me out, she's forcing me out, she's -
"Thank you Gabriel." She takes his arm and squeezes, hand still covered by her sleeve.

"Don't worry, I don't snore so you can take that look off your face."
He had hoped that Chandra's room would house the couch but no luck so he was stuck with her for the night. He had heard them talking as Chandra said goodnight, if Eden was happy with the arraignments. No one bothered to ask me...
Turning to her now as she steps from the bathroom in a vest and shorts he stares silently but she just does the same, head cocked. She's not scared of me at all. Clearing his throat he gets up from his make-shift bed and slips past her to the bathroom, change of clothes in hand. "What look?" He doesn't give her time to answer as he shuts the door. He leans back against it and catches his reflection in the mirror over the sink.
She's insignificant, she's harmless. He keeps telling himself that but it doesn't make him feel any better. She had seen him perform with his telekinesis and had been rightly shocked and shaken but that was it. No awe, no fear. Just questions, lots and lots of questions.
Not directed to him of course, but Chandra. He was the professional, not him.
Jaw clenched he pulls his t-shirt over his head and undid his jeans, listening for her. It was meant to be him and Chandra, just here for a few hours. But as he turns the bathroom light out and moves into the room and sees Eden curled up in the bed he knew that wouldn't happen. He had planned to go in secret, to the special person, and take what he needed without interference or witnesses. This was their first outing and he had been inexplicably excited and horrified about trying again, after Brian Davis.
Now he couldn't, or at least her presence made it less assured. Sighing he settles down on the couch, half mindful that it's too small and tries to sleep. But he can't, his lids opening to watch her, expecting the glinting of her still, unreal eyes watching him respectively in the dark.
