They had names for her at The Company, before it had been disbanded. Typhoid Maya, Black Eyes, La Llorona to name a few. Never to her face but she knew. Names that vilify and mystify her, something to scare little kids...

She now walks down a pristine suburban street, the weather warm and the sky a spotless blue. It's casts the the rich houses a glowing gold, increasing the air of prosperity and safety. Particularly contrasting to Maya, who had last been in a desolate filthy village. She looks at them wistfully, the longing to be stable rising suddenly. But she had been on her feet for so long it had seeped into her blood. And she couldn't stay still, especially not now.

She reaches a house like many of the others, two storied with a large garage situated at the front. It's very pretty. Curiosity as to how he could live here plagues her as she hedges closer, but not to the front door. She moves around the back, her eyes ever watchful.

She had circled for hours before, like a carrion bird, until she deemed herself ready. Years she had been waiting for this moment, years of trying to move on, forgive but it would never let her be.

But now it would, it had to. She walks to his fenced garden, death brimming within her.

Mr Muggles paws at the glass and Noah bites his lip as the little dog looks at him plaintively on the other side. He wasn't meant to go outside today because of his cold.

But even his dad says dog's eyes are the worst, no one can resist a 'puppy stare'. Especially Mr Muggles's.

His doggy bounds for joy as he opens the door and races inside, does a circuit of the table and then races back out again. Noah smiles and follows him out with a glance back. But the coast is clear. He walks out onto the grass, sneakers on his feet and his teddy clutched in his hand like always. As he stands in a patch of sunlight Mr Muggles lies down, the sudden burst of activity obviously to taxing for him.

"You're lazy doggy." 'Pampered' is what his dad says, even as he feeds him treats. "You wanna watch the TV, don't you?" Mr Muggles cocks his head and then settles his chin down on the grass, blinking. But then suddenly his ears perk and he's up, trotting to the fence. And it's then that Noah sees the woman looking at him.

She has a trembling hand covering her mouth, staring at him with huge tear rimmed eyes. He thinks she's going to be sick.

Noah, very shy around strangers, looks at the woman carefully, face still. Mr Muggles yipes at her, not used to being ignored and she looks down at him after a long moment, frowning. Her hand leaves her face and he gets a clearer view of her. She's pretty, he thinks, large dark eyes and lots of curly hair. She's dressed in a t-shirt and beige shorts, the sneakers on her feet very worn. She looks up at him again, the shock on her face still persistent. Her mouth wobbles open.

"Hello." Her voice is accented. She sounds like Mr Gonzales at the bakery, where they get there pastries from on Wednesdays.

Noah doesn't respond but continues staring as she comes forward slowly, looking over his head every now and then. He notices that she's shaking and he frowns.

"Do you want to see my daddy?"

Maya's heart races uncomfortably fast, pounding in her head as the little boy looks up at her, somber and quiet. Her throat convulses and it takes a huge effort not to loose control. She smiles at him, trying to put him at ease. But the shock is all consuming, beating at her reeling mind.

Daddydaddydaddydaddy -

She sucks in a sharp breath and shakes her head vigorously as the tan coloured dog sniffs around her boots. "N - no, no..." They stand in an awkward silence, looking at each other with large, unblinking gazes. Finally Maya looks down at the dog and lowers to a knee and proceeds to scratch the dog under his chin, which he seems to love. The rhythm of Maya's heart settles somewhat. "Pretty doggy..."

"He's called Mr Muggles, like from the Harry Potter books." His voice is soft and well spoken but clearly snuffly and he sniffs often. and Maya stares at him with a smile, nodding.

"That's a funny name for a dog. Have you read them?" Of course he hasn't, he looks about four, Maya mentally scowls herself. Noah shakes his head, more comfortable talking now.

"No, but daddy says he'll read them to me when I'm older." His eyes shine hopefully, already excited for the prospect. Maya, feeling hypersensitive, takes note of the stuffed toy held in his hand and frowns at it. It's a purple monstrosity and she tilts her head, squinting.

"That's interesting."

Noah looks down at it, bringing it up to his chest as he smiles proudly. "Me and dad made it. Mr Octopus."

"It's got fangs."

"It was for Halloween." He looks at her like Duh. Maya snorts through her nose and then laughs, much to loudly and Noah covers his hand over his mouth, trying not to smile at the sound of her honking laughter. She blushes and strokes Mr Muggles.

"What is your name?"

He hesitates for a moment before answering. "Noah."

"Like from the bible..." she says softly and he nods. He's much more animated now.

"My daddy is called Gabriel, like the -"

"Angel..." She finishes for him and the sadness wants to crush her. She turns her face away, closing her eyes. She had come here with a disease stored within her potent enough to flatten a small island. She eradicates it with a blink, shocked that she still held it. When she feels his clammy hand touching her own Maya opens her eyes and peers at him. He's a beautiful little boy and she can feel the well nourishment and love surrounding him, even as he twitches his stuffy nose.

He's a good father. It's maddening.

She looks over his head again, staring through the french door into a kitchen. She keeps her voice light.

"Where is your dad now?"

"He's telling the nursery that I can't come today, I've got a cold." He looks at her long suffering and Maya feels her heart scrunch. She bends closer to him, smiling gently and he looks at her with wonder.

"I bet you're not allowed out..." Noah blushes, looking down. He mumbles something about it being Mr Muggles fault before Maya places a finger under his chin and lifts his face to her. "Can you do something for me?" Noah nods, his hand still settled on hers. "Can you close your eyes. " he does it, smile curving his mouth, "hold your breath, and count to three in your head?"

"Of course!" He nods and takes a big breath and holds it. Maya counts out load as her ability blackens her eyes and she uses the flip side of her gift.

"Three!" Noah opens his eyes and takes a breath, staring at Maya with puzzlement as she gets to her feet.

"Why did you tell me to do that?"

"You'll see the next time you blow your nose." She grins at him and he becomes even more confused. She breathes in deep and places her hand over his cooling forehead, brushes his hair back before she bends down a places a kiss there. "You're a good boy."

Noah, suddenly curtained by her hair is freed as she moves back and leaves. But he had seen the tears on her cheeks, even if she was smiling.

Leaving Mr Muggles to sun bathe Noah does what she says and goes back inside and takes a tissue from the large cardboard box under the coffee table. His father finds him inspecting the contents of it very carefully and he grimaces.

"That's disgusting I hope you know." Noah reddens at being caught by his daddy, but his expression is quickly replaced with awe.

"She took my cold away!"

"Who did?"

Noah shrugs "I dunno. She had a funny laugh and kept on crying." He watches as his father's face goes a sickly shade of white.
