2 “You shouldn’t be here. Where is your suit?” The old man bends slightly and she can make out his face more clearly. He looked like a fat man suddenly gone too thin. Nadia shrugs and looks at his suit and spots that it’s been duct taped over the leg.
“I don’t need one.”
“Then you’re contaminated.” The man straightens and backs away slightly and Nadia pulls a face.
“What? No, my daddy gave me the cure so I can’t get sick.” Nadia thinks the man is stupid, of course she’s not ill, she wouldn’t be out in the air if it was poisonous.
“It might not be poisonous to you Nadia but it is for me.”
Her eyes widen in surprise “Hey! How do you know my name!?”
The man doesn’t reply, just looks over her head with a sharp look in his piggy eyes and then looks back down. “You’re here with your dad?”
“And my mom.” Then Nadia has the strangest feeling, like a feather is tickling over her mind. She raises her hand to pull her hair as the man suddenly stiffness and then whistles.
“Sylar…” He bends down to look Nadia in the face, eyes roaming her features and a strange smile curves his mouth. “Your dad is the bogeyman.”
Nadia thinks he sounds almost impressed and she‘s even more confused.

They make their way up the escalator, both their heads feeling dizzy as they climb the unmoving stairs.
“She’s definitely on the forth floor?”
“Yes, where else would she be? She‘s fine, there‘s no one else in the mall Maya, I looked.” Maya doesn’t answer him as they reach the floor and sees a sea of beds before them. Past those is the kids area. She stills, sighing.
“She’s getting worse.”
“She’s just being a kid.”
“Yeah a naughty one that never does as I say.”
He tilts his head at her, sardonic experssion. “Like you never misbehaved?”
Maya opens her mouth to speak and then closes it. She was a terror, her brother was always the well behaved one. Gabriel smirks at her, shaking his head as they walk around the beds. She feels her chest constricting at the thought of her brother and she looks away from Gabriel. She usually tried not to think about Alejandro to much, it was to painful and so hindering to the life she was now forced to live in. Her daughter had no idea about her uncle, only that he had died and she wasn’t to mention it. Nadia was clueless and it must stay that way.
For now.
Maya stumbles slightly and she sees that her shoelace has come undone. She sits on a bed and Gabriel stops before her, thumb tracing the railing of a crib set next to the bed.
Maya watches him and she asks before she can stop herself. “Did you ever think you would have kids?”
His eyes focus on her and she ignores the pleased smile on his lips before he speaks. “No, I didn’t.” He comes forward and kneels by her “but I knew it was an imperative.” Maya’s lips downturn at the words. He always talked about evolution, like he was an animal that was compelled by a force to do things.
Her hand rubs the bed sheet under her, the fabric smooth and cheap. “I was an imperative?” He continues to gaze into her eyes and she feels her stomach turning over. What happened in that motel room was something that was almost never alluded to. Why was she doing so now?
His hand reaches up to twirl a loose strand of hair around his finger. “Not at that time. It just…I wanted to and so did you.”
“You still want to.” Oh shit what am I saying?!
His fingers still and he burns his eyes into her head. Her breathing grows heavy and she shifts on the bed, throbbing. “Maya? Are you -” Suddenly he stops, eyes moving to look down at the bed and then around, shock falling over his features. He gets quickly to his feet, pointing to her. “Look.”
“Que?”
“The bed, look at the sheets,” he turns around, brows frowning more, “look at the walls.” Maya looks at the sheet under her hand and feels a sharp ping in her sluggish mind. It had changed, she was now sitting on a garish purple print where before it had been cream. She rises her head, frowning and then stands up.
“It’s the motel bed.”
“And the wallpaper is the same.”
Maya turns her head to speak and then completely freezes. Her mouth wobbles open and her eyes almost bulge out of her head in fright. “Ahh dios! Ah ah ah.”
“Maya?” He turns to see what she’s looking at and his face drains of colour. Alejandro and his mother were standing in the distance, looking at them with dead eyes. They were both stained in blood.
“STOP IT!” He rocks back as she hits his face, shrieking hysterically. He grabs for her, hands tightening around her thrashing arms and pins them as he pushes her down. She is panting and trembling, they both are.
“I didn’t do that Maya!”
“You did! You did! You killed him!” Tears are streaming from her eyes and they leak into the sheet below them. Gabriel shakes his head.
“Those figures Maya! Why would I want to see my dead mother?” His voice rises and he swallows painfully. Maya gradually stops struggling under him, looking up at him with a stillness he’d rarely seen. He lets go of her arms and wipes away her tears with his thumbs. “Calm down ok? You need to focus. Something is going on here and I don’t know what but we need to get Nadia.”
She breathes deep, closing her eyes and nods.
*
“You live here?”
Nadia sits by the table that Mr Parkman had taken her to. Dollies sit on the chairs around it and there are real china cups and a teapot sitting in the centre. Nadia watches him carefully as he nods. He seems nice but she doesn’t trust him. He was covered in tin foil after all and after he had mentioned Sylar, whoever that was, he had become fidgety.
“Yeah, I’ve been here for six years. But one day, when the air gets clear, I‘m going to leave and go to Washington.”
“Why?” The shock on his face is comical and she almost laughs. He might as well have said “duh.”
“Because that’s where everyone is…That’s where my son is.” The distracted look lessens as he looks at her in consideration. “You should come with me. You’ll be trading one monster for another.” He laughs, his body shaking and shadows on the walls flicker and grow. Nadia sees a big gun leaning against the wall and feels gooseflesh rising over her skin and the need to urinate suddenly nags at her.
“You’re not a monster, you’re an old man in a stupid suit! You shouldn’t say things like that!” Her mother was right, it’s not funny when you couldn’t tell the difference between real and fake. Mr Parkman stares at her almost sadly before he looks backup sharply.
“Your parents are coming.” Nadia gasps and rises but suddenly a voice speaks in her mind.
SIT DOWN.
Nadia sits back down, trembling. Mr Parkman sighs and continues to look at her with the same sad face. “You can’t choose your moms and dads right? The world would be a much better place if you could.”
Nadia blinks and then he’s gone and she tries to stand but can’t. Nadia was a brave girl, she was the most popular kid in her class - no the whole base - but this was different because she had never been alone in her life. There was no one to order and no one to listen to her.
“DADDY? MOMMY?”
*
“Where is she?” Maya’s voice is thick and rough, with just an edge of panic to it. She and Gabriel stand amidst the plush toys. They had looked everywhere but she was nowhere.
“She was here Maya, I could sense her and then suddenly she just blinked out.”
“What do you mean?” Her voice is high and she stares at him, terrified. He moves to her and brushes his hand down her arm.
“It’s ok. She is here. It’s like something is covering her presence and their own. I didn’t even sense anyone else.” His eyes close as he speaks and keeps them closed as he falls silent. Then after minutes where Maya feels like slapping him just to get him moving his eyes fly open. “Got her.”
“Thank god, thank god.” Maya lays a hand to her chest, the cross pressing to her palm.
“Come on” She follows him around a bookcase and as she passes an arm wraps around her throat and drags her back. Maya screams in shock.
“Now hear this! You just turn back and go home and there will be no trouble.”
Gabriel turns to see a skinny man holding a gun to Maya’s head and then sees others coming towards them, all holding weapons. He lifts his arm, wanting to pull their weapons away but then lowers his hand with a lurch.
“Gabriel?!” Maya speaks through her bared teeth, struggling against the man that holds her.
“My powers don‘t work…on them,” Maya sees his eyes narrow at the men around them and he tilts his head and he smirks. “They don’t have heartbeats.”
“They’re not real?”
The skinny guy laughs and he nods. “You’re sharp. You’ve been living on my turf all this time and I didn’t even realise. Teach me not to watch my back yard.”
Gabriel prowls up and down, eyes never leaving his. “Who are you? Why are you doing this? Those guns won’t do anything.”
“But who’s to say I’m not behind you, aiming a real one? Or you’re not aiming one at her head? Boy I’ve been doing this long before you were born, don’t think you can get around me.” With that the man suddenly vanishes in mid air along with the armed men around them.
Maya gasps, lowering her arm down. She had her own hand wrapped around her throat. Gabriel reaches for her hand and pulls her quickly until they are running towards the back of the fourth floor.
*
“Time to go little girl.” Nadia jumps in shock as Mr Parkman suddenly appears and she finds herself on her feet. He looks down at her shoes and then back up at her in disgust. She had wet herself and the smell was strong. “I hate kids.”
“Where is my mom?! I want my mom and dad!”
She can see him rolling his eyes through the glass covering his face. “Why? Don’t you know what they are? They’re evil. Trust me, you’ll be better off in Washington, where my son Matt is. He’s a good guy. So no, little Nadia, you can‘t.”
Nadia stands, looking at him with her mouth open. She was dumbfounded for a moment until just as suddenly her eyes blaze. “No? NO? You have to do what I say! You can’t do this, I don’t like it! Don’t you know who I am?!” Her breath whooshes out of her mouth and her cheeks redden.
Mr Parkman looks at her in shocked silence and then laughs. “Maybe I was wrong, maybe you do deserve to be with your parents. Little girl you are horrible.”
Nadia’s eyes widen and she inflates with wounded pride. “You - you crazy…SHIT HEAD!” She darts forward and, grabbing the tape over his leg, pulls with all her might.
RRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIP
Nadia jumps back, tape hanging from her fist, as Mr Parkman looks down at his leg and starts to scream in fear as he sees the gape in the material and frantically tries to cover the torn seam. The surroundings around her brightens and she’s suddenly in a large stuffy room, the walls lined with silver. She turns to run but a hand pulls her back.
“You little bitch! You’ve killed me!”
Nadia screams shrilly.
*
A scream cuts the air and they both whip around. Maya sees a door and they run towards it, Gabriel at the front.
“Nadia?!”
The door bursts open and Maya shields her eyes as the light shinning off the tinfoil rays everywhere. She blinks her eyes rapidly and sees that Gabriel is stalking towards a man that he has in a telekinetic grip. Nadia is struggling in the man’s arm. He has a knife to her throat.
Maya does not have her old ability anymore but the sweeping, powerful rush that surges up within her is almost interchangeable with her rage. Her eyes feverishly search the room.
“You do anything to me and I’ll slit her throat!” His voice is guttural and Gabriel stops near them, face grim.
“You’ll be dead before you can twitch a finger. Who are you?”
“I’m the nightmare man, and I know you. Sylar the bogeyman.”
“My name is Gabriel.”
Mr Parkman shakes, hands tightening on the knife and he narrows his eyes at him. “You hate that name, your mind is a mess, so many masks. But I can see that geeky little guy in there. Oh you just want to die, don’t you? You know that would be for the best, stop hurting the people you love. Or think you love.”
“Daddy? I’m scared, I wanna go home.”
His eyes lower to his daughter and he gets on his hunches, smiling. “It’s ok cariño, this man can’t hurt you, he’s crazy but harmless.”
“I told you to be quiet girl, you’ve got a big mouth!” As he says it Nadia’s eyes close, her chest rises and falls, as if she’s deeply sleeping. Mr Parkman looks back at Gabriel and laughs. “I’m crazy? You and your woman take that crown. Killers on the run, like Bonnie and Clyde!” His voice pants and his glass shield fogs up. He’s in a panic. “Oh she’s so angry at you, she has to stop herself killing you every time you go near her. But -” he sucks a breath through his teeth, mean eyes narrowing even more “underneath there’s a part that still - ”
BANG!
Gabriel jumps as glass shatters and Mr Parkman is thrown back with a spray of blood and bone. Gabriel turns to see Maya with a shotgun, still aiming to where she had just fired. As his body falls to the floor she lowers the gun, breathing heavy and her face is grimly determined. She drops the gun to the floor and runs to her daughter, scooping her up in her arms.
“Is she ok?” She looks at Gabriel, concerned and he nods. He bends down to kiss his daughter’s head and brush her hair tenderly.
“She’s asleep but she’ll wake soon. You better take her out of here before she does.” Maya nods and then looks down at the dead man with disgust.
“Asshole talked to much. Rot en el infierno para tocar mi hija!” She adjusts Nadia in her arms and walks away and he looks at her retreating back with an intense affectionate smile. When he’s alone he looks at the man below him and then crouches down, drawing a phial of blood from his coat.
“Wakey - wakey nightmare man.”
