Molly Walker

Molly was sat at the back of the playground, watching her come forward with a smile.

“Hello Molly.”

“Hi Mrs Petrelli.” Her eyes were bright and serene, overall looking more composed. The doctor had told her that Molly had been put on medication and was now much more coherent. Heidi smiled back and sat down on the bench next to her. They were seated in an exercise yard for the younger inhabitants, monkey bars and slides. Heidi looked away from the twisted frames.

“I guess you knew I was coming?”

The teenager nodded, shrugging. “I knew you’ve just been to see Meredith. I don’t see her, or the others. I’m in the juvenile section. But I’m glad I can still feel them.”

Heidi stared at the short girl, sitting slighting hunched in a pair of grey jogging bottoms and a t-shirt, and was hit with a wave of shame. She took her smaller hand in hers and bent down to peer into her eyes.

“I have a son the same age as you, he’s at school now. Molly I’m going to do everything I can to get you out of here, ok? I promise and I never make them lightly.”

Molly looked at her with eyes that were far too old, having seen things far more terrible then her. “How?” The word was spoken softly, almost scared.

“Nathan, he’ll listen to me.” As soon as she said his name Molly sat back, hand going slack in her grasp. She shook her head.

“No he won’t.” She released a tired sigh and looked at Heidi with a solemnity. “I know you don’t want to believe me, I know I sounded crazy before but I swear I am telling you the truth.”

“That my husband is the bogeyman?” It came out snappish and Heidi winced.

Molly didn’t flinch. “Yes, Nathan isn’t Nathan, he’s Sylar.”

Heidi shook her head and wanted to tug her hand back but instead she tightened her hold. She had seen Molly’s record, read what Sylar had done to her parents. Seen the photos that showed a scene almost surreal in it‘s brutality. Molly had been found in the cupboard that her mother had been pinned to. She had heard her mother’s body being hammered into the wood. Heidi bent down again, speaking softly. “You’ve been through and witnessed things that no one should have, let alone a child. I’m so, so sorry for that Molly. I’m sorry that you are here now.” She touched her cheek lightly. “You’re a brave, tough, kind person and I’d be proud to have a daughter like you.” Heidi was worried that she would turn from her, taking her words as meaningless praise but she smiled shakily, her eyes welling up. She looked down at the tarmac and didn’t look back until her shoulders had stilled.

“But you still don’t believe me?” Sadness shone dully.

Heidi thought fleetingly of lying but thought better of it. “I can’t, I can’t believe that.” She squeezed her hand.

“I just wanted to help you, to warn you. I guess now it‘s up to you, right?” She raised her eyebrows and Heidi nodded. She suddenly thought of Meredith and the main reason she came to see Molly and looked at her with query.

“I do need your help. Meredith wants to know where her daughter is, we both do. Do you know where Claire is?”

Molly nodded, looking apprehensive. “I only have bad news. She’s not anywhere, not anymore.”

Heidi felt her stomach plummet. “She’d dead?” God, poor Meredith.

The girl nodded. “Yes. Sylar got her.”

Heidi frowned. “Do you know when this was? Meredith said that she saw her daughter getting taken away on the TV some years ago. Was it then?”

“No, it was a few weeks ago. I told Meredith that she was still alive, that was why she did it, the kidnapping. But then after we were caught, after we made the demands, Claire went out like that.” She snapped her fingers. “But I knew it was coming and there was nothing I could do, they just gave me more sedatives. You see.” She leaned closer, eyes widening. “You see I have everyone at the back of my mind. Now it’s ok, they’re really faint but before they were just everywhere, all crammed around me. But I always had him clear, always. Sylar went after Claire, went to the prison she was in and killed her, took her power.”

Heidi sat back, her mind going over things that she didn’t want it to. Nathan left her on her own at the house, went with a breezy excuse about work. But he had that prey-spotted shark look she knew all to well on his face. Heidi closed her eyes and breathed deeply, clearing her mind. She looked back at Molly as a guard came up to them.

“Looks like I have to go. Remember what I said, I am going to try everything in my power to get you out of here.” Molly stilled for a moment before darting forward and giving her a hard hug. Then she sprung up and walked away, waving goodbye. Heidi remained where she was, wind cold on her wet face.

Nathan would listen, she’d make him.

Sarah “Eden McCain” Ellis

“Is the tape really necessary?” Heidi was sat in the same room she had seen Meredith in. This time it was a small, dark haired woman seated opposite. Looking slightly emaciated in Heidi’s opinion. Maybe she finds it hard to eat with her mouth tapped shut.

The guard shuffled on his feet. “Yes, Ma’am. The prisoner is high risk.” Heidi looked at Eden who’s large dark eyes looked at her calmly above the tape.

“Well I’m not here to write to her so take it off.” Heidi’s blue eyes seared into his and he moved into action, taking the tape off. But left her handcuffed. Eden licked her lips and grimaced.

“Disgusting.” Dark eyes switched from the guard and focused on Heidi. It was her eyes that she remembered most, more then her voice. Eyes that drilled through yours and took over your head. Heidi had first thought that she had been hypnotised when she had been ambushed.

The door closed with a click and Heidi sat forward, gaze steady. “I’ve promised that I will try and do all I can to get you off. You have my assurance on that.”

Eden sat still, staring-staring-staring. Finally she sniffed. “I’m thankful for the thought, I am but we both know I’m not going anywhere. Neither are Meredith or Molly. I sit here and wonder what’s taken him so long. I think he wants to make us linger, wondering when he’ll come for us. Maya‘s gone…” She trailed off and looked out of the window before looking back at Heidi. She narrowed her eyes. “You still don’t believe?”

“No, and I never will. You all took a huge risk on the voice of a mentally and emotional damaged girl. Do you see why I could never believe it? It‘s preposterous.” Heidi shook her head, trying to get her to see reason. She tilted her head. “Why do you believe her?”

Eden sat forward, her arms chained to the chair arms. “You’ve heard of the Company right?”

Heidi nodded, frowning. “I’ve heard but my knowledge is hazy.”

“Well I was an employee. The Company’s objective, before the bomb, was to find any specials and tag them. Bag and tag as Bennet use to say. So that was what I did, I helped find them.”

“But that’s no different to what happens now. Bagging and tagging still happens.”

Eden shook her head. “Tagging happens now but to not only to track but to make others aware of them. We were secret, they were secret. And that‘s how I met Molly. Sylar killed her parents and she came to us. We helped her, cared for her while simultaneously helping her to get control of her power. But then we captured Sylar and she ran away.” Eden lowered her head and turned her cheek away. She had survived an encounter with Sylar but not unscathed. She was scarred, the right side of her face and lightly down that side of her body.

“You were lucky.” Whispered Heidi.

Eden smirked. “It’s not the first time I’ve got one over on him.” She sighed and sat back, pressing her lips together. “So Molly ran away and Sylar escaped. And then the bomb.” Eden was silent for some time, frowning. “I thought I would be ok, especially when Nathan became president. But I was wrong wasn’t I? I understand in a way, everyone was panicked and scared, there was all this stuff that suddenly was visible and no one wanted to see it. So he locked them up. Locked me up.”

“And that’s where you met Maya?” Heidi had requested to see her but she was not on the site.

“I did. We became friends.”

“Did you share a cell?”

“No, me and Maya are dangerous ‘abnormalities’ so were are kept separate. But we used to see each other at the experiments.”  For the first time Eden’s eyes softened. “They used to make her cry, they would do horrible things to her. I would see her when it was my turn. Pitiful. So I requested that they might as well do something useful and use me to do it. Killing two bird with one stone. So I used my power to make her cry and she wasn’t tortured. Everyone had to wear special suits.”

Heidi swallowed, her thoughts going to Nathan. “Why would they want her to cry?”

“They collected her tears. She was their weapon on tap.” Heidi suddenly had the mental image of a laboratory filled with black liquid in clear tubes.

“But she could have killed all of them then.”

Eden nodded. “I know and she would have much sooner I think but they were using her brother as blackmail. They threatened to kill him if she didn’t cooperate. So she did.”

But Heidi knew eventually that Maya did use her power, on everyone. “She killed the entire prison when you all broke out.”

Eden nodded sadly. “You see we had been thinking about escaping for weeks, we had a plan. She would use her power to take everyone down, but not kill, and I’d use mine if we needed to. But then we saw Molly and she told Maya about her brother.” Eden’s eyes darkened. “They had lied, he had been dead for years. Sylar had killed him.” She licked her lips, shifting in her seat. “I’ve never seen anyone so sad, so angry…”

Heidi had seen the news reports and witnessed the stricter enforcements after it. The death penalty for the most dangerous. “Then what happened?”

“After that Molly directed us. Maya wanted to go straight to Sylar and so did I but Molly said that she could find Bennet, my old boss. So we went to Texas and that’s where we met Meredith. Bennet hid us, I thought he was going to kill Maya but it was ok, I made it ok.”

Heidi laid her hands down on the table. “You wanted to kill my husband?”

“No, I wanted to kill Sylar. But I think Maya wanted to more then anyone. She would never tell me why but I think they knew each other at some point, in the past. What ever happened she hates him. Gabriel…” She snorted, shaking her head.

“Why did you decide to kidnap me? What did you think to achieve?”

Eden focused on her and tilted her head. “We thought we had it all settled. We would kidnap you, get you on tape, the presidents wife, confessing that Nathan was Sylar and you had been forced into living with him. He would be flushed out and Meredith would get her daughter back, and Maya and myself would get what we wanted. But the plan completely fell through. Because it relied on you, it relied on the fact that you would know. I never thought that you would not believe, after living with him for years. How can you not know?” She stared at her incredulously.

“There’s nothing to know Sarah. He’s Nathan for Christ’s sake and I wish you would just believe it. I think I’d know.” She drew in deep breaths and stared at her hard.

Eden nodded, biting the inside of her cheek. “I knew him before you know. I knew him when he called himself ‘Gabriel Sylar.’ I thought he was harmless, I even thought he was cute!” She smiled with a curdled humour. “But I never knew, I never suspected. And that oversight has cost millions of lives. My oversight. All this could have been prevented if I had just opened my eyes.” She was breathing heavily, biting her lip hard as her eyes became glassy.

Heidi didn’t know what to say and felt intrusive with such a huge guilt pulsing from the woman opposite. Saying sorry wasn’t enough, never could be. Finally Eden called to her softly and Heidi looked back.

“I’ve just seen Molly, I asked her where Claire was.”

Eden raised her eyebrows. “How is she?”

Heidi blinked rapidly. “I should have said earlier. She’s doing good, better then before. Her mind is in one place.”

Eden nodded, relieved but sad. “And Claire?”

“She told me that Sylar killed her, killed her and took her power.”

Eden sat up, her pale features all sharp. “He has her power.” It wasn’t a question. She leaned forward as close as she could, her voice lowering in octave. “Please listen to me. If your husband is who you think he is then he’ll bleed when you cut him. Claire could heal herself and if he does…well then we’ll both know for sure won’t we?” Eden looked at Heidi’s affronted, derisive face and blanched. “Come on Heidi, there must be a part of you that wonders? Little things that are not right, something different? The way he looks at you? Not remembering things he should? They way he touches you?!”

Heidi stood up, shaking her head. She was tired, emotionally. “I came here to say that I don’t hold anything against you. I’m praying for you.”

“I don’t want your prayers! I just want you to consider! That’s it! If he doesn’t heal then you have nothing to worry about. But if he does. Don’t take everything I’ve said, everything that we have done, and forget it. Don’t make our sacrifice futile. Because I believe it, with every piece of me. Don’t let him get away this time Heidi.”

Huge, velvety dark eyes gleamed hard like diamonds and Heidi couldn’t look away.
