2 A lone seated figure sat squarely in the middle of a sunbathed disserted warehouse.
They had blindfolded her, the soft black cloth tight against her eyelashes and snug around the temples. The sunlight that shone through the windows on her side was burning and consistent, making her sweat. Her ankles were still tide secularly to the chair legs but she could move her wrists more freely now, the plastic cutting against the skin. Her whole body hurt.
The sound of her own breathing was all that could be heard, loud and fast. But soon the distant wail of sirens and the whoop-whoop of helicopters reached her and she felt such a huge rush of joy and relief she couldn’t stop herself from crying.
The sound of steel screeching against steel shot through the air and then the shouts of men and the pounding feet surrounded her.
“Ma’am? Are you ok Ma’am?”
The blindfold was removed and Heidi was blinded by the light. She closed her eyes tight, white afterimage all she could see, as she gave her dry throaty answer. “Where is my husband?”
“Right here Heidi, right here.” The sound of his voice, strained and hoarse made her limbs loosen while fingers deftly removed the restraints from her. Then she launched herself forward, eyes still squeezed shut, and was gathered into a crushing embrace. “Shh, shh. Everything is ok, I’m here. You’re safe now.”
The First Lady and the President knelt together as millions of dust motes floated through sunbeams.

It was a lapse in security they said, a situation that they were unprepared for. Either way the offenders were found and imprisoned and the lapsed security officers, that flanked Heidi wherever she went, were never seen again and quickly replaced within hours. Her husband saw to it personally. It had been a media-circus, something other than the bomb to sink their teeth into.
Heidi shuffled the cigarette box back and forth between her hands, fingers opening the lid before quickly closing it again. The French-doors opened out onto the garden, flooded brightly with security lights.
“Should I be worried?” Nathan’s voice issued from her side softly and Heidi turned with a smile.
“I’ve had this box with me since I quit, almost eleven years. Don’t worry, I just like having something to fiddle with. My hands,” she stretched out her hand to him as he sat next to her. “My hands won’t stop shaking.” The tremors running through her fingers stopped when he took her hand in his, holding with a gentle firmness.
“I know, I could see them shaking when we ate. Here.” He nodded down to the small table between them and Heidi saw that he had brought her a glass of water with two white pills next to it. “ Take them.”
“That wouldn’t be vodka in that glass by any chance? She hoped aloud…I hate pills,” she sighed as she picked up the glass and swallowed the sedatives down. They both sat in silence, watching the trees in the distance sway. Heidi slipped her hand out of his and rubbed her face. “I must look terrible.” She had been crying on and off all day. Shock the doctor said, perfectly normal. She had been tied up alone for almost twenty hours before she was found. Three days before that she had been kidnapped.
He turned to her, cocking his head to the side. Finally he smiled. “Nah, you look fine.” His eyes flicked over her face lingeringly. “Just as beautiful as the first time I saw you.”
Heidi snorted. “In dungarees, telling you what were the best Phillip screw heads to buy?” He chuckled, nodding.
“You’re almost as good with your hands as I am…” Silence stretched again, growing more thick for Heidi as her mind replayed what had gone on before. She cleared her throat.
“I think I’ll be ready to go before the cameras at the end of this week.”
Nathan raised his eyebrows at her. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. You‘ve just been through a lot. You should rest, away from all that.”
“And what message would that send? I hide myself away and they have won. But they haven’t Nathan, and I can go out there and tell people that.” She looked at him plaintively but he shook his head.
“I’ve already sent a clear message Heidi. We caught them and they will be punished accordingly for kidnapping my wife.” His words were low but they caused a shiver to pass through her, as if they had been bellowed aloud.
Heidi frowned. “They have been sent to the prison with all the other…mutants.” It was a word she usually avoided, a mocking child’s utterance, but she found herself saying it with a vicious thrill.
He stared at her hard for a long time before his hand moved to cup her cheek. “They have committed a capital offence and will be executed.”
Executed.
Heidi felt her mind blank before her thoughts rushed in on her like a wave. “My god. I never…I just thought they would be imprisoned, I never thought.” She frowned at him. “Jesus Nathan, one of them, Molly her name is, sounded like she was no more then fifteen.” So young and totally insane.
“Fourteen actually.”
“Nathan!” She stared at him appalled.
“Why are you so shocked? They broke the law, they took you hostage for days Heidi! Do you have any idea what that did to me?” He was breathing heavily, nostrils flaring.
She sat back, the sound of disbelief in his voice shocking. “Did to you?!”
He shifted uncomfortably, not meeting her eye. “You know what I mean. I never expected to - I had to keep calm but inside I was…” He trailed off, closing his eyes as he inhaled deeply.
Heidi leaned over to him, fingers on his cheek and turned him to her. He opened his eyes and they stared at each other intensely. Finally Heidi spoke gently. “They didn’t hurt me, they only wanted their family members back.”
His eyes widened and he laughed, drawing back. “I can’t believe you’re defending them! Don’t you see? If they have the gall to do that then who’s to say that some other person or group might get it into their heads to do it again? What if they see us being lenient and decide to ignore the legislation? Someone even more powerful and clever then them. Do you want another Sylar? Because I sure as hell don’t!”
He’s a monster, you’re married to the bogeyman. Soft words echoed up from her memory, whispering treacherously. Heidi shook her head. “I can’t take this now, I’m going to bed.” She stood up unsteadily and he followed her up, taking her arm.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have unloaded all that on you now.” He dipped his face down to her and kissed her mouth tentatively before it grew more persistent. Heidi felt her body soften and she leaned into him. But the suspicious voices would not leave her alone.
Unfaithful. Bogeyman. Bump, bump, bump…
