Rain pours outside, the likes of which she never imagined could visit such a dusty place like Odessa. Lightening flickers and the thunder booms, making the glass panes shake. It makes Maya feel calm, as if all her terrible emotions have been removed and placed in the sky. So it was a strange hollow peace and she knows that it will not last.

She pulls the vest over her belly, then rubs her hand around it and stares at herself in the mirror. She had started to steadily put on weight and her feet feel a little swollen but Penny, her midwife, said it was nothing to be concerned with. She felt healthy and there was no serious swelling anywhere else. The truth was he was the one that was especially worried, always fussing around her and asking how she feels. It is growing very annoying but she knows it could be worse, he could not care at all. Because that was the strange thing, his concern seemed genuine.

Not for me, the baby. She reminds herself with a dark resolve, pulling her damp hair back into a tail. "He pretends....pretends, pretends, pretends." She finds herself caught in a strange ambivalence concerning him, on one side continuously reminding herself that he was a fraudulent monster while on the other tentatively grasping to the hope that maybe he wasn't completely, not for her child. He was jittery and over the moon about the prospect of being a father and it throws Maya.

Throwing her dressing gown onto her bed Maya heads towards the nursery. It was being decorated and almost finished and the smell of paint was fading. She stops at the door when she sees him seated crossed legged on the floor, planks of wood and nails next to him. Seeing her shadow on the carpet he looks up happily and jerks his thumb back at the rain pebbled window. "Looks like we'll have to stay in today." Maya purses her lips but comes further in instead of heading out. She was curious to see how the room was going. He smiles, pleased, before stretching over for a teddy and throws it to her. Winnie the Pooh. Maya narrows her eyes at him, squeezing the bear in her hands.

"What's the age range for this?"

"It's not for her, it's for you. Winnie." He says in a coy tone and Maya glares at him, sucking her teeth. Her craving for honey had now reached absurd levels and he watches her with increasing amusement. He likes to tease her but does it lightly, never knowing where the line might be on any given day. But he always procures more if she needs it, though Maya never asks. A few days ago he had hummed the theme to Maya the Bee at her and she had to stop herself from smiling. Things like this, these little normal moments leave such a deep imprint on her and possibly on him. What it could have been like, the fantasy life she imagined for them before she had learned the truth. Pretends, pretends...

"You're such a child..." She shakes her head and, rubbing a hand to her forehead, looks for a seat.

"You ok? Hang on a tick." He gets to his feet and from behind the crib picks up a big bean bag chair. "I got it for you last night..." he says softly, dropping it down behind her. He comes to stand before her, offering his hands. Maya looks at them and then up into his face. He was wearing glasses, something he does very rarely because he usually wears contact lenses. It gives him a very nerdy and meek persona, very different to what she is used to. Sometimes it was hard to believe that he was genuinely insane, that her brother's ashes sit forgotten back in New York because of him. She has to remind herself but simultaneously doesn't want to and it was an exhausting state of mind to be in. Maya thins her lips before placing her hands in his and he lowers her down into the chair gently, Maya leveling her weight against him. Once seated she slips her fingers out of his quickly and sighs with relief, wiggling.

"I don't think I'll get back up now. Like an upturned turtle..." she directs to the toy bear and he scoffs lightly, getting back down on his knees and picks up a screw driver.

"I'll help you back up." He lets his eyes rest on her longingly and it's clearly appreciative. He had told her many times how lovely he finds her but it just makes her feel uncomfortable. He looks away and glances at an instruction manual before throwing it dismissively over his shoulder. Ignoring him Maya looks up at the room and sees that the wall papering is now completely done. It's yellow and cream stripes, sunshine bright and the room always seems to glow warmly. She inhales deeply, closes her eyes and she sinks into sleep and so doesn't feel him kissing her forehead and placing a hand on her belly.

"I've got a surprise for you tonight..."

Honey cakes, honey cereal, honey and cinnamon muffins, honey cookies, honey ice cream....it went on and on. And it was all there for her, a smorgasbord of her craving all collected from god knows where. She had entered the kitchen for a midnight snack to find it all piled on the table, the smell of it drifting into the corridor. He knew she wanted it and said he would find her what she craved but she never expected it to be in this magnitude. She had tried to leave it there, not wanting to accept something that was clearly his way of trying to reconcile but she was fighting a loosing battle. She hordes it in places, in her bedroom, and pretends it's not there until her cravings become too intense and she ends up scarfing the treats down.

Now she sits surrounded with empty wrappers and sticky fingers, looking guilty and slightly horror stricken.

"El es correcto, ye soy Pooh Bear..."
