When Maya enters the motel room it's to find her brother sitting up in bed, leaning back against the headboard, his arms folded behind his head and the strangest smile on his face. She sighs when she sees him and drops the bag of clothing she had bought at the street market on her bed and speaks before he can scold her.
"Sorry I took so long but I haven't had the oppurtunity to get new clothes for so long. Was everything alright?" Alejandro opens his eyes, shining humorously and shrugs. Maya frowns at him as she pulls her purchases out and lays them on her bed. Smugness rolls off him in waves until finally he starts to laugh softly. Maya places her hands on her hips, eyes narrowed in suspicion. "What?! What did you do?!" She knows her brother and this sort of behaviour was out of place. But she fears she knows the reason behind his wicked good humour and it could only be about one person.
"I haven't done anything!" He gestures as he leans forward with his palms showing. But then he shrugs again, smile twitching his lips. "But well... earlier today, when you went off to shop, we were hungry so we got some food. Had some tacos, that's all..." His lips tremble and something maliciously pleased shines from his eyes. Maya's feels her stomach drop.
"Why are you so happy? Did you poison them?" Maya says sarcastically but something was putting her on edge.
"I wish!"
"Alejandro!" she shouts, shocked. She had never seen her brother like this, he didn't have a malicious bone in his body. Until recently. Alejandro sucks his teeth and sits up, crossing his legs.
"It's not my fault that weak gringo has no stomach for nothing to spicy. But he couldn't stand the fact I could and he wouldn't stop eating." He shakes his head, scoffing. "I left him a few hours ago, spewing his guts out." Maya seems to inflate with wrath and he shrinks back slightly, smile falling.
"ALEJANDRO! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?! CONO!" She bellows, appalled and starts to pace, throwing her hands in the air until she stops before him, arms flopping down at her sides with dejection. Everyday it grew worse, the tension and spite coming from her brother. She could understand him being worried but this behaviour was unacceptable. "Can't you just be happy for me? I have never felt this way about anyone before Alejandro."
His jaw clenches and he snorts, angry eyes flashing. He opens his mouth and she prepares herself for a verbal attack but then he snaps his lips closed and breathes out a long breath, regaining control. He swallows and turns his face from her, lying down. "I'm not saying anymore, I don't want to fight." He turns his back to her and Maya shakes her head, sad and annoyed.
"Fine, whatever. I'm going to make sure Gabriel is ok..."
He doesn't answer her as Maya closes the door, her body wound tight with vexation. Ever since her brother had punched Gabriel a wedge had been driven between them. She still can't quite fathom that the man that threatened to let Gabriel die was her own twin. Crossing her arms over her chest she keeps her eyes lowered as people walk past her on the stairs, thankful for the cover of night. No one had recognised her and there hadn't been any newspaper reports but she was wary non the less. Coming to his room she finds the curtains over his window open but the room beyond dim, the only illuminance a glow of light coming from the bathroom. She knocks on the door and calls softly.
"Gabriel? It's Maya...are you ok?" She cocks her ear to the door when he doesn't respond, shifting on her feet and frown lines begin to appear on her forehead. Just as she's about to turn the handle his weak voice drifts to her, telling her to come in. She rushes into his room, heading for the bathroom and peers around the door frame. He's sitting on the floor by the toilet, back against the wall and looks very drained. He smiles at her weakly, sighing.
"Hi."
"Oh Gabriel! Are you ok?" She gets on her knees before him, placing the back of her hand against his cheek, forehead and then brushes his hair back with soft fingers. His eyes close and the smile grows.
"I'm ok now, don't have anything else to throw up." His mouth downturns and he slumps back against the wall. "But I think I'll just stay here..." His eyes crack open to find Maya still staring at him with concern, gripping his hand and he chuckles. "I'm not gonna die Maya. Go back to bed."
Maya purses her lips and moves to sit down on the tiles next to him. "I'd rather stay in here, with you..."
He looks at her shrewdly. "You two had a fight?"
Maya shakes her head, staring imploringly into his eyes. "I'm so sorry Gabriel. My brother has never acted like this before, I never thought it was possible of him." She looks towards the door, her jaw clenched. "Bastardo..." she looks back, eyes fierce. "I think he's jealous, he doesn't want anyone to come between us."
"He's your twin." Gabriel offers moderately and Maya nods.
"I know and that connection will never end but - but somethings have to change, you grow up and form different connections to people...I would not sacrifice my relationship with him lightly, which he should know more then anyone." She stares at Gabriel hard before her eyes soften and she appears captivated. But then suddenly her fingers touch his forehead again, concerned. "You feel clammy." He lifts his hand and presses her palm flat against his skin, very quietly moaning with pleasure.
"And you're cool...I should have a shower."
"Si, it will make you feel better and then after that bed." She says firmly, getting to her knees and then stands, offering her hand to him. "Levántate Gabriel!" She says energetically, slapping her thighs and he smiles again and takes her hand and is lifted up with a surprising show of strength. He groans aloud and stumbles, staring at Maya blearily.
"Never leave me alone with him again." He whispers long suffering, a mock expression to match his tone. She snorts and slips her arm around his waist, squeezing him to her. For such a tall, toned man he was slinky. But the humour fades as her worried thoughts bombard her. She really shouldn't leave them alone together, god knows what else could happen, something even worse... These thoughts buzzing she sits him down on the bed and heads to the kitchen to boil him some hot water. When she comes back out he's toeing his boots off and yawning.
"Here, it will settle your stomach." She says, offering it to him and stares at the mug with a strange wistfulness as he takes it.
"My mother used to say that."
"All mothers do." she whispers and winks at him before moving into the kitchen again, speaking aloud as she does. "You might feel like you never want to be eat again but in a few hours you will be starving. So...yeah I'll go get you some food and cook you a proper breakfast. Don't worry," she says as she comes back into his room, cup of coffee in hand, "nothing too heavy."
"Thank you. Christ knows what would have happened to me if you weren't here." She demurs at his look of gratitude as she sits but then turns to him with consideration.
"You trusted me at the border, put your life in my hands..." she comes closer and cups his face, looking at him intensely. "I never thought I would have that kind of faith from someone again, not now. So I should be thanking you." He just smiles at her, very still before he brings the cup up to his lips and drinks with a nod. But immediately draws it back with a wince.
"Hot." he hisses and she makes a low cooing noise and leans over him, bringing her mouth to the rim of the cup and blows on the water, making the steam billow around her face. She then takes a sip and satisfied moves back, smiling brightly. Gabriel regards her with an expression she had seen before, an amused befuddlement; like he couldn't imagine why she was doing this for him. He remains unmoving until his fingers twine into the hair at the back of her head, bringing her closer and plants a quick kiss to her forehead. When he draws back she stares at him with wide eyes, her lips parted but when Gabriel brings the cup to his lips she quickly does the same, blushing.
Thirst sated she waits for him to come out of the shower, becoming more nervous as the minutes tick by. When he exits the bathroom, dressed in a pair of boxes and toweling his hair off, he comes to a stop, surprised.
"I thought you would have left by now."
She rises, backing to the door. "I know, I should go. I'll do that if you want..." But as her back brushes the door he shakes his head and takes a step towards her.
"No no, you can stay as long as you want." He smiles at her and looking down at himself quickly pulls a t-shirt on, covering the wound on his side. She had been tending to it, when he allowed, but he didn't like her seeing it. Maya grins and sits in the armchair by the bed as he pulls himself up to rest against the headboard, watching her with half lidded eyes as she starts to smirk, her eyes narrowed with a strange dark light. "What is it?"
Her smirk turns to something more shy but she speaks with bite. "Alejandro would be very annoyed if he wakes and I'm not there." Her eyes sweep him, softening with tenderness, "serve him right for being an asshole." Gabriel nods and tries to hide his pleased reaction but she catches it anyway and stands, smiling. He clears his throat and looks around the room.
"So..." he trails off, looking at Maya closely as she paces around the room, looking at the ugly prints on the walls. She catchers his eye, keeping her place by the heavily framed picture.
"So? Mmmm, ay where am I gonna sleep?" To her surprise he actually reddens at her suggestive tone and she laughs loudly. "Dios Gabriel, don't look so scared!" still chuckling she sits back down in the armchair, eyes on him as he settles his head down on a pillow, so he doesn't have to show his reddened face Maya thinks.
"It's not everyday I have a beautiful woman watching me sleep...never actually." Maya blushes furiously and has trouble keeping the strong swell of emotion off her face. But she's never been adapt at that and he reads her pleasure easily, his eyes narrowed in bemusement. A silence settles for a few minutes where they stare at each other. Finally a smile blooms over his sleepy face.
"I can't sleep because you're looking at me."
"You're staring at me!" She retorts quietly, her head tilted back. "Don't worry, I will leave soon...I just like being alone with you, it doesn't happen often."
"That's true," he whispers and begins to frown, his eyes flicking between hers. "I wish it could happen more, all the time..." she nods sadly but doesn't respond at first, knowing what he's referring to. Finally she sighs and rises up, coming to him.
"Tell you what? Next time we find a cheap enough motel I'll stay in your room more often, come make you breakfast before Alejandro gets up." She bends down over him and his fingers reach for her trailing hair, twining strands of it around his fingers tightly.
"I'd like that..." he whispers as she nods and after a hesitating moment bends down and presses her lips to his cheek, the stubble prickling. She realises she likes the sensation and presses her cheek closer before rising. Or attempts to as her hair is still caught by his fingers. He stares with teasing eyes. "Got you."
Don't you just, she thinks and restrains herself. It was so hard, having to suppress her feelings because it would anger her brother. I shouldn't have to, this is so important. But she keeps her thoughts to herself because she has the over powering sensation that he knows and needs no words for it to be expressed. Maya leans further down and sighs at him, gripping his entrapping hand in hers.
"Looks like I'll have to cut it off then..."
"Or not! I love your hair." He says and eyes it, scrunching his fingers through the soft mass hanging over him. Maya laughs throatily, feeling warm as she nods.
"I had noted. So no chopping it off or you might cry..."
"Possibly maybe, yeah." he says teasingly and with a deep, lingering gaze lets her hair coil free from his fingers.
"You get to sleep now, I'll be here first thing in the morning..." She quickly kisses his cheek again and rises, her heart and blood pounding and, suddenly feeling spontaneous, rushes into the kitchen and searches the cutlery draw. Luckily she finds what she needs and brings the dull looking shears up to her head and snips a lock off. She has masses of hair so it will not be missed. Feeling happy but oddly shy Maya walks back to his room to find him asleep and she stills, looking down.
Give it to him. She places it on the bedside cabinet and finding the motel issued note pad hastily writes a note and leaves, feeling like she just did something forbidden but totally right.
Dear Gabriel
It's always yours.
Love Maya.
