Jinchi High School.
Located in the countryside of Japan, it was an ‘all boys’ school like any other -more or less.
It had your regularly offered classes, your regular variety of students, and -of course- the regular cliques that the students were separated into.
But as the bell rang on the first day of school, and the large gates swung open to admit that year’s student body into the grounds, little did anybody know, but the winds of change were already heading their way.
Mysteries would be unraveled, and many of the students would have their lives changed forever.
Jinchi High school would be regular no more.

Wednesday - Semester One - April 27th

“Alright, settle down class. This is Wednesday. Monday would have been a little more understandable but you should all be back into school-mode and ready to work by now.” The teacher stood behind her podium at the front of the room, trying to calm the rambunctious second year class in front of her. She shook her head, resorting to the ‘lucky ace’ she had tucked in her sleeve. “Hurry to your seats and listen up please boys, so I can introduce the new transfer student.”
She smirked as the class’s occupants froze momentarily before hurling themselves into their respective seats and shooting their best ‘good-boy’ smiles in her direction. She shook her head, feeling the room buzz silently with curiosity and excitement as she head to the door and opened it.
“Class, let me introduce the new student from England.”
A boy stepped into the room. He had light brown hair that flopped down over one eye as he stepped up to the teacher and surveyed the class nervously. He was wearing thick glasses; his white uniform shirt was buttoned all the way up to the collar and tucked into the plaid pants. He carried his books in his arms, hugged tight to his chest, and his voice was quiet as the teacher gestured for him to introduce himself.
“Um, my name is Ogawa Tetsuya. I used to live here in Japan, but I’ve spent the last three years living in England. I just moved back here with my family, so… Um…” He shifted nervously before bowing quickly. “Nice to meet you all.”
“Yes, welcome to your homeroom, English 11, Tetsuya-kun.” The teacher smiled before pointing to an empty seat halfway up the third row. “You can have a seat there.”
Ogawa Tetsuya nodded, bowing again and muttering his thanks before hurrying to his seat.
The rest of the class passed normally. Tetsuya busied himself with taking notes -though he already knew everything that was being taught- and focused on ignoring the stares his classmates kept placing on him. Yes, the rest of the class was sizing him up. When they’d heard the new student was from England, they hadn’t expected him to be Japanese. Even more reason for disappointment was that the new kid didn’t seem to be anything special at all. Frankly, his entire appearance and demeanor was screaming ‘I’m a vulnerable nerd! Shove me in a locker please, I’m used to it!’ so by the time the bell rang for first period, his classmates had already decided that there was nothing of interest about him, and he was brushed aside.
Tetsuya sighed as he packed up his things and watched his classmates leave the room without even a ‘nice to meet you’ or more than a cursory, dismissive glance.
This was going to be like England all over again.

“Alright guys, quiet down for a minute. We’ve got a new student today, just transferred in from Shanghai, China.” The teacher ran a hand through his scraggly, graying hair and turned to call out the open classroom door. “Come on in and introduce yourself!”
The boy who sauntered into the room with a grin was tall with a mop of dark, wavy, hair on his head, his uniform partially un-tucked, and a guitar case slung on his back.
“Hey,” he greeted the music class with a jaunty wave. “I’m Kitamura Ken. Nice to meet you!”

“Oi! Put that down, you’ll take out someone’s eye!” The woodworking teacher sighed, brushing some woodchips from his bushy beard before raising his voice again. “Okay, just turn off the saws for a minute boys!” He waited a second while the room quieted down. “Right then. I almost forgot, today you’re all getting a new classmate! He’s from New York, apparently… Anyways, let’s all make him feel welcome, Hm?” The teacher waved cheerily at the figure standing in the hall, who straightened up and ambled in at the cue.
Chains hanging from his belt jingled with each step he took. His white uniform shirt had the sleeves rolled up to the elbows and his tie hung loosely around his neck. His expression was rather brooding, and his eyes were unreadable and dark as he flicked a piece of spiked blonde hair out of his eyes and stopped in front of the class.
His posture slouched casually as he adjusted the black bag slung over his shoulder with a quiet sigh. “I’m Awaji Yukihiro…” His voice was deep and rough as he announced his name, saying nothing more.
Some of the other students exchanged looks, and after a short awkward silence the woodshop teacher cleared his throat and gave the new student a pat on the shoulder.
“Ah… hm, very good. You can join--, hmmm…” He scratched his beard thoughtfully. “Who doesn’t have a partner yet?”
“Oh! I don’t! Me!” Called a tall, lanky guy with bright multi-colored streaks in his hair. He emphasized his words by bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet and waving his arm in the air, as though afraid he wouldn’t be noticed from his position at the room’s back.
“Okay then…” The teacher looked almost apologetically at the new student. “You can be with Miyavi-kun.”
Yukihiro offered a small grunt of assent in return before wandering through the wood and equipment to the tables at the back of the dusty room. His classmates watched him go with interest and also some amount of wariness before placing their safety goggles back over their eyes and returning to their various wood projects.

“This is different, right Chacha?” The tall blonde boy grinned at his longer-haired lab partner as he stretched his arms above his head. “I mean, last year we didn’t get around to actually dissecting anything until the year was like… half over, or something.”
Chacha shrugged, his long, wavy, blonde hair falling over his shoulders. “Well, we do have a new teacher this year. Ju-ken had her last year and he said she’s a lot more ‘hands-on’.”
The tall boy snorted at this comment, bursting into a short fit of laughter. “Yeahhh~, like he would know.”
Chacha’s lips twitched, not able to hide his own amusement as he thwacked his taller friend on the arm. “Aw, shut up Yuu. You know what I meant.”
Yuu continued to laugh anyways, that is until a thick biology textbook thumped him heavily on the back of the head. The tall boy whipped around with a more-startled-than-pained yelp.
“Gacchan! What was that for?!” He frowned, rubbing his head as he regarded the dark haired boy that sat behind him.
“The teacher is trying to talk, so you two better shut it.”
Yuu scrunched up his nose. “Is that supposed to be a threat or something?”
Gackt sighed in irritation, rolling his eyes as he rest his chin in his palm. “I’m just saying you better pay attention, or else you’ll end up with detention before we’ve even been back a whole month.”
Yuu pouted but spun around in his seat anyway as the rest of the class quieted to allow the biology teacher to finally be heard.
“--new student. Please give him a warm welcome!” The young teacher smiled pleasantly as she pulled open the classroom door, seemingly unaware of the fact that her students had missed almost everything she’d just said as a result of the racquet they’d been making.
“Wait, new student? Really?” Yuu whispered excitedly to Chacha who shrugged in return, nodding towards the boy that had just stepped into the room.
He was short with pretty feminine features. Big dark eyes were partially hidden beneath the flop of dark brown hair that kept hanging in front of them. He smiled slightly, looking only a bit nervous under everyone’s curious gazes.
“Go ahead and introduce yourself, dear.” The teacher smiled, tucking a piece of hair that had escaped her ponytail behind her ear.
“Um, my name’s Takarai Hideto. I’m glad to be back in Japan, so… Yeah. Nice to meet you all.” He bowed.
“And we’re so glad to have you here, right class?” The teacher flashed an award winning smile at her seated pupils who all replied -some a bit too energetically.
“Yes, sensei!”
“Good, now.” She turned back to the new student. “You’ll need a Lab partner… Gackt!”
The dark haired boy raised his head from his crossed arms, barely stifling a yawn.
“Gackt, you’ll be Hideto-kun’s partner from now on. Okay? Help him out if he has trouble catching up.”
“Oh… sure…” Gackt looked the newcomer over once before setting his head back down on the desk again.
Hyde shifted nervously before accepting a textbook from the teacher and going to his new seat beside the taller dark-haired boy.
The teacher began drawing the diagram of a frog on the board, pointing out the major organs as she went along. Seeing she was immersed in her teaching, Yuu swiveled around in his seat, quickly followed by Chacha. Hideto looked up in surprise as the two blondes grinned at him.
“Hey there!” Yuu mocked saluted before extending his hand for the new student to shake it. “I’m Yuu.”
Hideto hesitantly accepted the hand as the long-haired blonde held his out as well.
“And I’m Chacha.”
“Oh, nice to meet you both. I’m--“
Yuu laughed. “We already know who you are, Hideto.”
“Eh, right.” Hideto chuckled. “But you can just call me Hyde. I haven’t been called Hideto in years.”
“Really? Why not? Hideto’s not a bad name…”
“Yuu!” Chacha hissed at his taller friend. “You just met him, you shouldn’t pry.”
Hyde laughed quietly. “No, it’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with my name, it’s just my former classmates found it a little difficult to remember and pronounce. Hyde was easier.”
“Oh~… Ano, where are you from exactly?” Yuu asked sheepishly. “That is, if I’m not ‘prying’…”
“You’re both such idiots. If you’d been listening at all earlier you’d have heard the teacher say it.” Gackt, who’d been silent up ‘til then, growled under his breath.
Yuu and Chacha both frowned at him, and Yuu opened his mouth to respond, looking annoyed. However, Hyde beat him too it.
“It’s fine. Really, I don’t mind.” He turned back to the two blondes. “France, actually. I’ve been living in Paris for the past three years.”
“Wow, Paris? That’s so cool! What’s it like?” Chacha smiled, interest obviously caught.
“Well…” Hyde trailed off, thinking of how best to answer.
“See, Gacchan?” Yuu smirked smugly at the slouching dark-haired boy. “He doesn’t mind us asking, so you can stop ‘defending’ him.” He chuckled good-naturedly, but was cut off by Gackt’s jaded retort.
“Who says I was defending him? I’m just sick of you two being such brainless dumb-asses.”
“Hey, what’s your problem lately?! Since the school year started you keep ditching us to hang around with Mana’s crew, and you’ve been acting like you’re better than the rest of us all week!”
“Yeah? Well maybe I just realized that I am better.”
“Oh my god, just shut up! I’m getting sick of all your shit lately, stop lashing out at everything just because you’ve got a problem, and tell us what it is!”
Gackt snorted condescendingly and turned away. “What, so you can play psychiatrist and make everything ‘all better’? Forget it. You want to know what my problem is? Fine! It’s that I’m sick of you two! You’re both so freakin’ immature and I’m tired of it. Grow up already and leave me alone.”
“Gackt.” Chacha spoke up, placing a firm restraining hand on the red-faced Yuu’s shoulder. “What’s wrong? This isn’t like you.”
Gackt whirled around in his seat, his cool and indifferent façade beginning to show the slightest of cracks. “Then what is like me? Hm?” His questioning expression turned into a glare of disdain. “Don’t act like you know me so well when it’s obvious that your concern is nothing more than a fucking show.”
He made to turn away again but was stopped as Yuu leapt up -knocking his chair over in the process- and hauled the dark-haired boy to his feet by the shirt collar.
“A show?! We’re your friends damnit! What part of ‘friendship’ is it that you’ve gotten so screwed up?!”
“Friends?!” Gackt snarled, fisting his own hands in the other’s shirtfront as the emotionless wall he’d built up crumbled away entirely. “Don’t make me laugh, Yuu! I’m just the guy you keep around to get you out of trouble whenever you idiots run into it! We’ve got nothing in common, and no other reason why we should have been anything more than strangers!”
The entire classroom was frozen as they watched Yuu open his mouth to retort.
“DON’T TRY AND DENY IT!” Gackt roared, cutting him off and shoving the blonde backwards into his desk.
Chacha jumped to his feet and caught Yuu by the arm, preventing him from ricocheting onto the floor from the force of the shove.
“Camui!” The teacher shouted, looking alarmed by the scene. All heads turned towards her as she took a deep breath, trying to retain her cool. “I’m going to have to ask you to leave the room.”
There was a tense silence before Gackt staggered back a step, the emotion fading from his features, as he nodded once in the teacher’s direction. Clearing his throat quietly, he picked up his shoulder bag and began walking calmly between the rows of desks towards the door at the classroom’s front.
The teacher stopped him as he passed her. “I’d like to see you back here after last bell. We can have a little talk. Okay?”
Gackt paused, his eyes flickering back towards the class that still watched him silently, before he nodded again. “Yes, sensei.”
The teacher gave him a small smile and watched as he exited the room as though nothing remotely worth caring about had just happened.
Almost instantly after his departure the buzz of excited and curious whispering rose up among the students in the biology lab. Yuu sighed, straightening up and then wincing as he placed a hand on the small of his back.
Chacha looked concerned. “Yuu?”
Hyde, still slightly shaken by the events that had just taken place before him, also frowned in concern at the pained expression on the tall blonde’s face. “Are you okay?”
“Ahh~, these desks sure are solid, huh?” Yuu chuckled, stretching a bit to try and lessen the pain.
“Yuu-kun?” The teacher called over the room’s chatter as she reassumed her place by the chalkboard. “Go down to the school infirmary and get that looked at.”
“Eh? Now?”
“Yes, now. Just in case, take Chachamaru with you.”
“Uh, yes sensei.” Chacha replied for his taller friend before turning to the blonde, who still looked like he wanted to protest. “Come on, let’s go.”
The teacher called the class to order as Chacha gathered their books and helped his injured friend out the door. Hyde watched them go, still not quite believing how startlingly eventful his first twenty minutes in this class had been.
He wasn’t sure whether to anticipate or dread the next five he was going to find himself in.
