OH NOES! I'm LATE

‘DING DONG’

Hyde hurried to answer the front door of his house. There was a wide brimmed hat on his head and a pair of those crazy glasses with the attached plastic eyebrows and nose placed securely on his face to hide his identity from the many trick-or-treaters that had been stopping by this thirty-first of October.

He pulled the door open to reveal a line of costumed people had lined up outside. The group consisted mostly of children, but the person standing behind the first kid in line was considerably taller than all the others so Hyde assumed he must be an adult, that or a really big eight year old…

“TRICK OR TREAT!” The first kid called loudly, holding out his pillowcase.

Hyde smiled and picked up the bowl of chocolate bars he had on the table beside him.

“So, what are you dressed as this year?…”

“I’m a goblin, of course!” answered the little boy, gesturing at the horns stuck to his head and grinning as Hyde dropped two chocolates into his bag.

Hyde then turned his attention to the man standing behind the boy. He was wearing a fluffy white sweater, zipped all the way, and a -strangely familiar looking- rabbit mask over his face.

“And what’s your daddy supposed to be, the Easter Bunny?” He chuckled but the boy looked up at the bunny man and made a face.

“He’s not my Dad, I don’t even know him… And he doesn’t look a thing like the Easter Bunny…. Sheesh!” He looked between Hyde and the man again, shook his head like it was the most obvious thing in the world, and then trotted off with his candy.

The man stepped up to the door and held out the pumpkin shaped bucket he was holding.

“Trick or Treat!”

Hyde blinked at the man’s deep and obviously adult voice and then froze… He knew that voice…. His eyes widened and he squinted at the mask as though he were trying to see through it.

“You’re not…?” The man laughed quietly and Hyde’s eyebrows shot up. “Oh god, you are, aren’t you?!”

The man chuckled again.

“Hello Hyde.”

“Shit. Get in here.” He grabbed the man’s sleeve and pulled him inside.

The kids waiting in line peered up curiously at him and he glanced quickly at the clock on the wall.

Great, only a few more minutes to go before Trick-or-Treating hours were over.

Hyde took the bowl of candies and set it down on the front porch.

“Enjoy.”

He closed the door firmly, ignoring the savage cries of the children fighting over the sweets on his steps, and turned to face the man behind him.

“You… What are you doing?”

The man pulled off his mask, revealing himself to be L’Arc~en~Ciel’s drummer, Yukihiro.

“It’s Halloween, what do you think I’m doing?”

Hyde rolled his eyes.

“Aren’t you a little old for Trick-or-Treating?”

Yuki frowned.

“I don’t look that old though…”

“Older than twelve!”

“Still…”

Hyde sighed, shaking his head, then glanced at the rabbit mask Yuki was fiddling with.

“Where’d that come from anyway?”

“The ‘Driver’s High’ PV, it’s the same one we used then.”

“Oh, I thought it looked familiar.”…

Yuki nodded then glanced down at the plastic, pumpkin-shaped, candy bucket he was holding.

“So…. Do I still get candy?”

Hyde raised an eyebrow.

“You serious?”

“Ken and Tetsu both gave me some when I stopped at their places! He pouted.

Hyde shook his head again but gestured at a box in the hall.

“There’s more candy in there, help yourself.”

“Yes!!! Thanks Haido!” He hurried off to begin rooting through the box in search of the more chocolatey treats.

“Since you’re here early,” Hyde called as he removed his disguise, picked up the duster from the broom closet, and wandered off into his living room, “you can help me finish cleaning for the party.” It wasn’t really much of a party, just a few friends coming over to hang out for a while, but calling it a ‘party’ sounded cooler that saying ‘get-together’. “Ken and Tetsu will be here in a bit.”

“Who else is coming?” Yuki asked, following Hyde into the tidy living room and setting his overflowing candy-bucket down on the coffee table with his mask. “Many others?”

“No, not really, just a few.” Hyde answered, standing on tiptoe to dust the fireplace mantle with his feather duster.

“Is Gackt coming?”

“Uh, yeah, but he said he might be a little late ‘cause he was busy with something else. Why? Were you talking to him?”

“Yeah, I saw him out on the street out there… See? I’m not the only one who loves Trick-or-Treating!”

“Yes, but you love it for the candy -which is okay, I guess. He, on the other hand, loves it because he’s… Gackt… and probably insane.” Hyde turned around, frowning at his friend’s eccentricity. “Speaking purely out of curiosity, what was he dressed as this year?”

“Count Dracula, of course.”

Hyde looked incredulous.

“Again?!” He stuffed the duster back in the broom closet and waved over his shoulder as the door opened and Ken stepped in followed by Tetsu. Hyde reentered the living room, quickly turning his attention back to Yuki. “This is, what, the fourth year in a row now?”

Yuki nodded.

“Only this time, he’s added a terribly off Romanian accent to the whole ensemble.”

Hyde blinked.

“Dear god, he really has gone mad!”

As this was happening, Tetsu stepped into the room, picking irritably at the bits of silly string that were stuck over the entire left side of his head. Ken was trailing him, trying and failing to hide his amusement, much to the bassist’s annoyance.

“You know, that guy’s crazy enough on his own,” Tetsu growled, “but he’s gone and brought Miyavi out with him this year!”

Hyde stepped over to the window, nearly tripping over Yuki -who was sitting on the floor and organizing his candy into separate piles- and peered outside. He shook his head slowly, listening to Tetsu complaining as Ken tried yanking out a particularly difficult strand of silly string that had gotten caught in his hair.

His eyes, however, stayed focused on watching a figure, that he assumed to be Gackt, sweep about the street in a long swooshy black cape, accompanied by a tall, skinny man with devil horns pinned to his multicolored hair. He was dancing crazily, setting fireworks off at random intervals, and shooting pedestrians with silly spray. Even through the thick glass of his window, Hyde could clearly hear him laughing maniacally.

People always said weird and unexplainable things happened on Halloween night. Apparently these things were common in Jrockers, particularly ones Hyde knew and was acquainted with.

The saddest thing was, these shenanigans were nothing compared to the antics he came to face every Christmas…
