So, I decided I should start chronicling each time I go to a concert. Not because I go to sooooo many concerts, but I probably forget about some of the ones I do go to.
Death From Above 1979 - Big Fish Sports Pub - October 14, 2005:
I had kicked around the idea of going to this concert for a while, but a timely IM (an hour or so before the show) from the inimitable g3k saying "I have an extra comped ticket, do you want to go?" really pushed me over the edge. I like them a lot, some have said that I "broke" them in this down due to my heavy play of them last year at the Blaze (no one has actually said that, but I'm sure they've thought that) so it was neat to see them. I hadn't gone back to the album too much in recent months though, thus my hesitance to commit to going earlier.
In my 22 years as a...person, I have never seen a show at the Big Fish Sports Pub. I don't know how I've avoided it, but it appears I haven't missed much! I was relegated to the 21 and under side due to my underaged friends Sam and Sacha (Matt, over 21, also showing solidarity on that side) and it was uh...cramped. And full of assholes (who seemed over 21). I'm all for mixing it up and having a good time during shows like that, jumping up and down and the kind of thing where you're all packed in together and kind of simultaneously moving back and forth. But these guys were like pushing and hitting and stuff, and that's just NOT COOL, man. I mean it's hard to enjoy a concert when you're UNDER ATTACK. We actually left early because of these mooks and I don't really do that, and I hate it when people do, but it's tough when there's 40 people packed in what should hold 10 people and 30 of those people want to throw down.
DFA themselves sounded good, though, although after a while (as one might guess if they have heard them) it all kinda sounds...the same. As I get older, I really am kinda moving past the kinda thrash-y, heavier stuff, but they are melodic and talented enough to get away with it. They didn't talk much to the crowd, which was a shame, because when they did, they were pretty funny, doing a bit about "caucuses," which is of course great. It's a somewhat obscure reference to politics and also sounds kinda dirty!
Oh, and the Mean Reds opened. I remember hearing them and being like "a live show from them must be like torture!" And, well...let's just say I'm not too heartbroken that it was their second-to-last show!
Also, there was a projection screen playing "Encinio Man" during the show. Kinda weird. Is that like, a tradition at the Big Fish? Playing "Encino Man" during concerts? Nice to see a fresh-faced Sean Astin.
Then after I dropped old Sammy off I met up with Lindsey and was taken to an apartment full of screechy young girls. That was weird.
